Grumpy front struts.
Easy cure!
Many older BXs have struts that creak, stick or groan.
Jumping jerkily when they rise in the morning, the "problem"
and the cost of replacement struts (£150ish each) has seen many
a BX driven that last mile.
Although you can rebuild a strut for about £40 if you know what
you need, there is some evidence that you won't have to.
Recently I looked at the problem anew. The construction of the strut is
such that it dries out internally. There is a felt washer designed to
act as an oil supply for the big slide bearing at the top. This dries
out and the strut becomes grumpy.
Fitted to the side of the strut are two rubber pipes. remove these, collapse
the suspension to its lowest setting and place the cleaned ends of the
rubber pipes into a vessel containing some LHM. Raise the suspension,
sucking in some of the fluid.
Replace the pipes and set the suspension to its lowest setting again before
raising it to normal ride height.
Now do the other side.
This idea has been tried around the globe with considerable success. Some
experts in Australia have put it onto the six monthly service schedule
for all BXs. It doesn't work on the Xantia or XM which are engineered
differently but on a BX, it has been known to work like magic!
