Welcome to BXClub.co.uk Temperature Gauge Fitting

One of the main problems with the BX diesel models is the lack of a temperature gauge, if there is a cooling problem, by the time the "warning lamp of death" operates, its quite possible that the engine is cooked. I therefore decided to fit a temp gauge.

The unit is made by Tim, and cost about £25.00. It comes with 3 brass threaded pieces, one of which should screw into the thermohousing, for the sensor. As my car has the later TD engine, I found that behind the fuel filter there was a 16mm blanking bolt into the waterway. This was removed, and replaced by the sensor. On the earlier engines, you should remove one of the warning lamp sensors from the front of the housing, and replace with the Tim sensor.

Inside the car, I removed the Clock tray and then the complete glovebox. A cable was then pushed through the rubber grommet where the speedo cable goes through the bulkhead, and connected to the sensor under the bonnet. The other end connects to the gauge. The gauge also requires an earth, and ignition supply, and a supply for the backlighting (I wired this into the sidelight circuit) You can take these 3 connections from the wires going to the digital clock.

As I didn't have the correct mounting for the gauge, I cut a hole in the clock tray and poked the gauge in. It would make for a neater job to obtain the correct mounting bracket for the gauge, and screw this onto the clock tray.

I know that some people have taken the temp gauge from a GTi type dash, and installed it in diesel BX's in place of the temperature warning lamps. If you have done this, please would someone do a write up that I can add to the above?
