Rear suspension cylinder

Post by ghaddon1701 »

Hi,
Some of you will remember the trouble I had a few weeks ago with what I thought was a suspension sphere seal failure. Howeve it has become apparent that it is the suspension cylinder that has failed. Some of you suggested that this mayhave been the case. I tried phoning Pleiades today, I pressume they are closed on a Saturday? I will have to try them again on Monday. In the meantime does anybody have a good rear suspension cylinder? I could do with one ASAP, I am not sure of the availability of cylinders until I speak to Pleiades. Thanks.

there was talk on here about the possibility's of repairing the cylinders,

maybe weld them up and re/machine the internal bore, or bore them out oversized and sleeve the bore with a stainless steel liner,

i think as long as they dont distort with the heat of welding up from the outside, and there is no blow through of weld internally this will suffice,
as the piston seal is not moving up and down the bore with the piston,

Xantia cylinders will also fit with a minor modification:

Those are nowadays easier to find than original BX ones.

I used a file for mine . So do you recommend fitting in pairs as the bores are different diameters ?

True, the bores should be identical. IIRC, Xantia Berline has 37 mm bore, which is the same as in BX Break, whereas BX Berline has a 35 mm bore.

Why can you only use the non-hydractive cylinders from Xantia's on the BX rather than the hydractive one's?

hydractive cylinders have MASSIVE pipes and unions feeding them!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

The difference in area (and therefore force from the cylinders) is only about 10% so I'm sure you'd 'get away' with mismatched ones. The anti roll bar would keep the car level side to side.
