Temperature gauge modification
Because so many of us have suffered head and head gasket problems due to an unhealthy cooling system and inadequate factory fitted overheating warning light, perhaps someone could shed some light on fitting an analogue temperature gauge?, suitable donor car? wiring etc?. I can't seem to find anything searching the forum,

There is a good explanation of the procedure here at this link. Steve

Re: Temperature gauge modification
Thanks for the link. Most add on temp gauges include a '1/8npt temperature sensor' - Is that compatible with ours?

Re: Temperature gauge modification
If you were to fit an additional aftermarket gauge and wanted to keep both existing warning lights, you would want something like this T piece.
Best to confirm the thread size for certain though, as although my link states it's suitable for the BX, I've read elsewhere that the BX thread size is M14 x 1.25mm not M14 x 1.5mm. From memory though, I'd say it's the coarser of the two threads. If you were prepared to get rid of one warning light, then you just need an M14 X ? to 1/8NPT adaptor but watch for clashing between a bulky gauge sender and the thermostat housing.

Re: Temperature gauge modification
Pretty sure it is 1.25mm.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Re: Temperature gauge modification
thanks Mat and docchevron - I would have thought I could have got a gauge with a sender that would fit directly but I trawled eBay and there were plenty taken from other cars but none of them included the sender, only the aftermarket ones with the 1/8" NPT . I don't anticipate any space problems - the terminals rise up from the thermostat housing in front of the fuel filter housing so plenty of vertical space at least.
Shortly getting my car back from the garage after a frustrating 6 weeks (and still the issue of the badly fitted? heater tap unresolved) , and will have spent £800, so don't want to take any more chances cooling system-wise.

Re: Temperature gauge modification
I'll try and remember to check the thread pitch tonight, so at least you'll be able to get an adaptor/T piece.

Re: Temperature gauge modification
if its temp, does it have to be a guage? you could get an LCD display with a thermistor type fly lead i guess. Personally i have K-Type thermocouples zip tied to the top and bottom hose, expensive if you dont already have a reader though.

Re: Temperature gauge modification
Thread size is M12 x 1.25mm - I had misremembered it as being coarser than it was.
