can someone tell me why the front suspension top mounts are different?

Do you mean one has the black rubber surround whilst the other doesn't?

I suspect that the one without started to rot & was just removed & i would have expected the metal underneath the rubber which is now visible to be treated/painted to stop further rusting/rot. I'm not sure exactly why they are covered in rubber in the 1st place?

I have just looked at a picture of a new bx without the metal covering over the rubber mountings.Still confused!

Are you on about the rubber cap on top of the strut mount rather than the bottom rubber surround of the strut mount that i'm on about? Either way, i personally wouldn't worry if one has it & the other hasn't as long as the condition of both is good.
