C/L plip

The central locking plip on my TZD works very intermitently, I have changed the battery with no improvement. does any one know of a fix or how to get a replacement?

Try checking for dry joints on the battery contacts.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Does the red LED stay on when you press the button or flicker? If it flickers then I'd check all the contacts (including the one made by the button) as Jay says. If not then maybe there is a problem with the joints to the IR LED. You can check using a mobile phone video camera or digital camera as the infra red output will be picked up by the camera's sensor.

Mine is gradually becoming less reliable too - but I very rarely use it because they thing\'s so chuffing huge.

At the moment it only works if I point it through the rear screen - none of the other windows.

I did have a plan to replace the whole shebang with one from a ZX, which has a smaller, more pocket-friendly plip. I told my sister of this plan when the smoke escaped from her ZX in a fairly major way, and - bless \'er - she posted me the plip and scrapped the rest of the car, so I sorta gave up on that one.

Thanks for the input chaps, the red led light comes on strong without flicker every time but doesn't appear to be transmitting throught to the reciever.

i replaced mine with a radio plip and receiver from a local electrical supplier in Australasia called Jaycar.

I know it isnt factory, but i got sick of being close enough to use the key in the door, for the bloody plip to work!

Was about an hours work to install, in my non sunroof i put it in the factory spot, in the sunroof one, i routed the wires down the pillar into the oddments tray/clock ,and it sits there, working no problem, from upto 20 metres away!
one thing better than owning a 16v-owning TWO 16vs

If you want to check the IR transmission, look at the emmitter through a digital cemera, they can 'see' the IR transmission and show it on the screen as white light. Handy for checking batteries in remote controls.

If its anything like the old start rite alarm i had on a 19rd then the problem was the IR diode had become weak. I suspect you should be able to easily replace the diode (looks like and LED) and regain the power for all of a couple of pence.

Jaycar used to advertise in some electronics mags such as Wireless World - have a scan through in WH Smiths before buying one - reasonable kit - reasonable prices too.
was the IR diode had become weak
There are 2 types of IR LED sometime known as 'covert' or 'semi-covert'. The semi-covert ones emit some red light like the ones you see in shopping centres etc for camera illumination. The ones usually fitted to plips are the 'covert' type - they don't show any visible light.

Either type should work as a replacement. Looking inside the LED you'll see one leg is connected to something that looks like a dish while the other leg has a fine wire going to the centre of the dish - Just fit the replacement the same way round.

Thank you very much for all these tips chaps it is very much appreciated, althought I would like it to work from 30' away I don't want to add aftermarket wiring / kit.
I will try the other suggestions when I get chance and keep you informed.

If you want it to work further away, get your plip & press it at the side of your head near your temple & press, hey presto, it works further away. If you don't believe me, give it a go, no idea why it works, but i've tried it on the mini & it worked 8)

Afraid that only works with RF key fobs - it uses your skull as a larger aerial. It won't work with the infra red type, unless of course you have a transparent skull...
