You mean a Hindustan Ambassador then, which is basically an old Morris Oxford, so not an Austin Ambassador, so your both right. Play nicely

But we don't live in India, also I've never been to India and I never wish to !

So as the foot note extends to states 'but based on a Morris Oxford from the 1950s'.

So if DES was describing the particular vehicle as to what it is known by in India, he should have stated it was a 'Hindustan Ambassador' !

Back O/T, IIRC the Green 19 TGD Estate has been on E-Bay before (Within the last 6 month's) where the corrosion issues were highlighted/discussed, if someone can be bothered to search thro' the forum/posts !

Oh what it is to be in the company of experts! I know it was an Ambassador because I had the dubious pleasure of a taxi ride in one across Delhi and I felt quite indignant that I might meet my maker in an Indian re-tread of a fifties car. Now that was an experience I'd rather not repeat  and certainly not one suitable for diplomats of any persuasion. Only slightly less scary than a ride in a tuc-tuc earlier the same day. Then there was the flight out of a fog-bound Delhi...

The Austin Ambassador was a face-lifted Princess, yes. What I don't remember is whether this was anything other than the desperate marketing ploy of British Leyland in its death-throes.

Anyone?

I sold a black Austin 2 litre Ambassador to a neighbour, it was a stunning looking car inside and out and he loved it, the only problem he, and I had with it was fuel consumption, he couldn't afford it and I couldn't improve it.
I think at best it got around 16 mpg. Gibbo.

Blumin eck Rick, The advert was filmed / based in India so Des quite correctly mentioned it as an Ambassador, this was purely a humourous correct observation not an advanced technical quote with dire consequencies if he was wrong (which he wasn't  ).

Thanks, Kevan. Couldn't have put it better myself! I was referring to a Hindustan Ambassador. The one I was briefly acquainted with was black, old and dented. Sadly I didn't get the driver's name or his inside leg measurement, but if fate should offer up a chance meeting, I will of course post my findings on this thread for completeness.

As for India, well worth the visit IMHO. It certainly has the effect of giving an individual a sense of proportion.

Apologies for rambling further off-thread. The BX is certainly worth a punt for someone... I am seriously considering a holiday home in the south of france and a diesel estate would be ideal for carting sundry possessions long distances. Maybe next year...

I had an Austin Princess for too short a time for it to appear on my list of 'vehicles owned' - it was a stop-gap car and pissed petrol out of too many orrifices. I thought the Princess was the 1800 and the Ambassador the 2200 ?

Interesting car despite its strangenesses - the balloon tyres meant that if I reversed into its parking slot in my driveway and just missed the tree - it would hit the tree on its way out again because of the flexibility of the tyres.

And another thing - popped in to the local shop and when I got back to the car there was an elderly couple sitting in the back  took me a couple of minutes to explain that it wasn't the taxi they'd ordered
