Universal fuel sender

Post by rutter123 »

Looking at fitting at one of these to replace the ailing intermittent o,/e unit, they operate at 240ohm to 32ohm from empty to full of vice versa, would this be compatible with the bx fuel gauge? My ohms knowledge is non existent so over to someone who knows.

No idea about the ohms I am afraid, you could try and measure the resistance values of your existing one to give you an idea of its suitability.
You will lose the sometimes useful reserve warning light and the replacement will have to be a similar length to measure the lower level fuel.
Have you tried dismantling it and trying rotating and retensioning the internals ? I tried this once though and it made it worse.
Recalibration of the gauge is another possibility but once again I have no idea how it is achieved although Mat Fenwick did mention once that it was doable I seem to remember.

If you haven't already, dismantling and cleaning of the sender is pretty straightforward. Every single one I've done has been revived by doing this.

The potentiometer "track" gets gummed up, particularly prevalent on diesels as the fuel isn't as light as petrol. Simply dismantle, clean the track with fine wire wool, ensure the two prongs on the float are making good contact and reassemble.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Thanx for that chaps, when I removed the tank the sender was in several pieces rattling around in the bottom of the tank, I think I have salvaged all the bits, the casing, a coil of slinky like wire, the middle tube, a plastic washer, and a few other small bits. I'll post up a pic of all the bits.
