Air Con Transfer from TD to TD advice please

Post by BX Bandit » Thu Jan 24, 2013 10:35 am

This spring will see the end of my TZD but a new beginning for my TGD. One of the many jobs I have is to transfer the A/C from the TZD to the TGD.

I'm sure it's mostly straight forward, but if there are any pointers/advice then I may as well consider them now.
In particular, my questions relate to the following:
Access in the engine bay looks ok, is it worth going to the effort of removing the engine (being that I have to replace the head and will probably have the g'box off as well)

I have two R134a compressors, both from a pug which to my knowledge will fit. So my plan is to convert to R134a as I fit the kit. Compressor wise, is it just a straight swap?
This is what I believe I will require:
new seals
new R134a specific dryer/receiver (I have a new sealed BX one, but it's R12, so the dessicant is unsuitable...? Is that true?)
new pipework! (I was told there is a barrier additive, but I'm unsure about it, is new pipework the best way to go?)

Is the loom plug and play or is splicing involved?

What's in yours Matt? R12 or did you convert like a good boy?

Can't answer any of them questions, no experience of it. But, if it's not in my red-books you'll need this:

I have zero patience for your tedium.

I think you're right about the drier but can't remember for certain. I changed all the seals (to the green neoprene type) but not the pipes. That said, I realised once the compressor was on that I needed to change the oil to a PAG type, and seeing as I could get a drop in R12 replacement (RS24) I went for that. I hadn't heard about changing the hoses too, which might be a bit pricey.

I am going to follow this with interest

Now the decison has been made to dismantle the TZS and return the TRS to road condition. I will have a complete aircon system without a vehicle, but if it dont cost to much maybe adding it to the TXD could be an option to look at.

With temperatures as they have been here drivng the TXD with tilted open sunroof and burning sun its not exactly pleasant and aircon feels so damn good.

Jay, would you mind posting the link as 'not a link' i.e. just text. The bloomin proxy server doesn't like it and I can't see the whole linkypoo.

Thanks Rob, yes I'd seen that thread, but couldn't really add to it tbh.

Kiwi, it won't happen till April probably, so don't hold your breath, but I'll do pics etc when I do it.

Matt, what dryer did you use? As in, was it the orig BX R12 type or a replacement. You can have that R12 one of mine if you like. There are two reasons I'm inclined to make the change to R134a.

1. My existing R12 compressor is FUBAR. So, as I have 2 suitable 134a pumps, rather than mess about with PAG oil etc to make them R12, I may as well make the change to suit R134a, which is the drier, seals and pipework.
2) I can't seem to find a decent a/c place that does the drop in and whom I fell aren't cowboys. So if I go the R134a route, then it's a simpler task to get a charge/rechgarge.

The condenser has a big hole in it, but I'm hoping to get it TIG welded.

Hmm, I might consider doing this too, I have to change the engine in my TZD, and I'm scrapping another with aircon, and I wouldn't want it to go to waste!

Smiffy you old dawg! How's things?
At the very least you could sell the kit for a good bit of cash. Is that your T Green one? What's wrong with it?
What DO you do to your cars? You seem to have a new one every year! What's wrong with the engine?

I was going to leave the A/C in the grey 16v as I'd decided transferring it to the red one was too much of a ballache.

But it would be nice..... :)

because the red one is a legend!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Sorry - it's like The Spanish Inquisition!

The engines are usually good, but the body rots away. The green one has a great engine, but knackered body.
The white one with the aircon, has a knackered body, and a tired, but reliable engine.

The other white one, has a good body, but no aircon, and a knackered engine..... see where I'm going with this?

The blue one needs an electrical modification, then MOT, then it can be sold.

The C5 I've just aquired was a lovely early birthday present from my mum!

"See where you're going with this?" 3 into 1? A FFFM?
