Diesel Pump

Post by rugmuncher »

Greetings. My Diesel Pump has developed a small leak from one of the levers. I assume it's a leaking seal washer. Is there a seal kit I can get or does it require professional attention. Failing this anyone got a diesel pump for a 91/92 BX TZD Turbo. I believe it's a K series engine. Sick here! I sold a complete engine, complete with pump, when Katie got totalled. Any advice or info gratefully received. Cheers Fellow BXers.

Bosch or Lucas? Both were fitted over the years, you must replace like for like as the set up on injectors/turbo is different. Doubt your engine is a K series (wasn't this Rover fitment?) It will be an XUD7TE If it's a stock bx t/d lump.
I should imagine a seal or kit would be available from your local diesel specialist.

Cheers feller. Yes the XUD sounds right, I think I might have heard someone say it before. I don't know where the K series idea came from! I'll have a butchers tomorrow and see what's what then see if I can get a seal kit. It appears to be leaking from the base of the throttle lever. Will the pump have to come off the car to fix do you think, or should I get a professional to sort it? Cheers bud.

Ive no idea if the pump will need to come off, I suspect if its a throttle arm seal it could prob be done in situ, diesel pumps aren't my forte ive been lucky enough not to have any probs with mine. I would think if you are gonna go to the trouble of taking the pump off then it would be best to have the whole pump serviced and all seals replaced, get a price first as diesel specialists aint cheap. If yours is a Lucas I have a spare complete pump that don't leak.

Cheers Rutter. I'll have a look in the morning to see if I can see what make it is.

If it's a Lucas pump (all but one of my TZDs have been Lucas-fitted) it can easily be done in situ, without even bleeding the system. The steel throttle pivot turns in the alloy top cover and eventually wears it out. Either that or the rubber O- ring seal fails. In the past I've cured leaks there for many thousands of miles by just changing the O ring and/or adding an extra one (there's a spare groove in the shaft), but that's only short term. I bought a new top cover complete and ready to fit - took five minutes, tops. Bought it from here:
http://www.diydieselshop.com/
It's also a mine of useful info on diesel matters, and the seller is always happy to offer advice (although sometimes he takes his time getting back to you). Can't remember how much the cover was, but it can't have been expensive or I'd have carried on changing the O-rings every five thousand miles!

I've had a good look, even steam cleaned the pump but I can't identify what make it is. How do I tell the difference?

I can dig out pics tomorrow, but easier if you post a pic of your pump in situ - easy enough to identify that way.

OK I'll take a pic with the phone tomorrow. Is there a tutorial on how to upload to the forum?

I don't think you can upload directly - have to use a photo-hosting service like Photobucket and then copy and paste a link.
Probably easiest to just email me the pic at kevin.raymond@wanadoo.fr .

You can upload directly from your phone using your browser.

Select the "Full Editor with Preview" (if you are not already in it).
At the bottom of the post editing page there is a tab marked attachments, in there you should find an "add files" button which will let you upload from your phone memory, or let you take a picture directly.

You have the option of leaving the picture at the bottom of the post or inserting it in-line with the text.

Hi KevR. It looks the same as the cover offered on the diesel site you suggested. To change the throttle shaft seal do I have to remove the whole cover or can I pull the shaft out and re ring it. Sorry to be so ill informed but actually doing under bonnet work is new to me. What size rubber rings do I need? I ask because once I take the pump apart I have no way of getting to the shops until it's put back together so I need the parts before I attempt it. Cheers Bud.

Yes, it;s a Lucas CAV pump. You have to remove the cover, because the shaft comes out from underneath, once you remove the nut on top and the accelerator arm. I don't know the size off the top of my head I'm afraid - I have a big box of assorted O rings and I just chose a couple that fitted. By the sound of it, you'll be much better off ordering a new top cover and doing the job once/properly. Just replacing the O rings will only be a temporary fix.

Sewells in Holbeck, Leeds will be able to supply you with the right kit. As Kev says, you need to use the proper kit, the hole in the cover will have worn oval. Just remember to smear the new cover O ring/gasket lightly with grease when you fit it to ensure it seals air tight
They think it's all over, it is now!
