Anyone want to rescue a 19GTi 8v? 1990 G-reg, black, low miles

Post by Kitch »

Took this car in last week for a customer. It has a running problem, which I suspect to be dizzy/ignition related. It will probably be a fairly simple fix, but when I advised him that some other bits needed attention, he decided to cut his losses now. It really needs someone to take it on who's mechanically savvy.

The good:

Low miles (less than 80k), mostly original, suspension/engine/gearbox etc all good. It's a known car (G820ALB if anyone wants to Google), looks nice in black. Lots of history and still MoT'd. Would make a very good base for a lovely GTi. Has sunroof deflector and those things that go round the windows on the front doors. I've driven lots of BXs and I know a good one from a bad. This is a potentially nice car, with some underlying issues.....

The not so good:

It needs a fair bit of work! In no particular order....

* The running issue (sometimes it starts, sometimes not. Doesn't seem to do it once warm, but it's not the CTS....before you suggest it! Needs someone to sit down with the ECU pinout list and a multi-meter. I could do this as a job at work if you're stuck, but you'll still need to sort....
* The clutch is on its last legs (the cable also feels dry)
* The ABS goes nuts for the first couple of minutes of a journey. Kicks in when applying the brakes normally! Once the light comes on a minute or so later, the brakes work fine, sans ABS.
* Needs four new tyres - the Michelins fitted are showing as being 16 years old! Two of them are beginning to crack fairly badly.
* Exhaust is rubbing rear axle (easy fix)
* Headlamp broken on nearside
* Distributor oil seal is allowing the dizzy to fill with oil (I'm 90% sure this isn't the running issue though, because of the behaviour pattern of the problem).
* Nearside steering rack boot split (the 'fun' one)
* Rust. I've found nothing terminal yet, but the A-pillar has a small hole O/S, the rear arch in the boot is feeling crusty, the bottoms of the B & C-pillars are flaky, the passenger front door is on the brink of being no good (possibly savable if you act fast) and a few other bits. There is a fair bit of rot that needs digging out and sorting (properly, not with filler) but there isn't any major re-constructive work needed, that I've seen so far. Don't assume there isn't, but then you can't assume there isn't on any BX these days.
* Body - the bonnet and roof have had some small blobs of cement dropped on them. There is a chance it might come off, there is a chance it won't. The nearside front corner of the bumper has taken a small knock, and the nearside rear has taken a bigger knock.

The car is currently with me in Fareham, Hampshire. The owner lives in London, nice chap. He's looking to get £500 back from it. I think it was up for £2000 a year or two ago, but then it looked much nicer then :( Shows it has potential though.

If you're interested drop me a line. I'll get some pics up later.

Yeah, it certainly looked nice only a year or so ago. Obviously the rust was building up underneath it, but like I say it's not condemned or anything like that, and could certainly be saved. It is a nice car, I'm quite taken with it myself but have no room/money/time/BX tickets left with my wife.

Further to the running issue/oil leak, we're starting to think there's a strong chance the two are related. If the dizzy has a hall effect sensor in it (which I'm guessing it does, though I haven't looked) then a new seal and a clean out might be all it needs. It would also explain why the issue seems to clear once it's warmed up more.

No guarantees though!

Missed it :)

Not too bothered, I just found yesterday that I have quite a few 8v bits around the place, including a dizzy and ecu. If that sale falls through, will you let me know?
