Sticky door locks
Sticky door locks
Before I start trying to take the door cards off, does anyone have a top tip to lubricate the door locking mechanism which seems to have suddenly gone sticky. The door handles on three out of four doors don't spring back flush and need to be pushed back before closing properly.

Re: Sticky door locks
Had this on my rear doors, unfortunately it was a door cards off job and a spray with some silicone both on all the internals and the outside handles, this was a few years ago but still ok to date. I found them more sticky in the winter months.

Re: Sticky door locks
Funny this has come up, Im having the same issue at the moment and was looking at how to sort it out. Cheers Rutter
Re: Sticky door locks
I reckon it's down to climate change. Something's got to be culpable. Oh well, off with the door cards then.
Next question is predictable - where do I start without breaking clips and assorted other lugs.
(Yes, I can hear the collective sigh of those of you who can whip these off without blinking, but I've never had to do it until now, right?)

Re: Sticky door locks
I have heard that Teflon Lock Spray is extremely effective even in freeing the key barrel too. There is quite a choice on the market too which you will see if you Google "Teflon Lock Spray".
There's a You Tube Video giving a run through of various lock lubricants too:

Re: Sticky door locks
Thanks. Its not really the lock barrel that's the problem, but if I have to take the door cards off all the locking mechanism is going to get a complete going over. I'll check out the spray.

Re: Sticky door locks
As ever, the proper tool makes life easier:

But I've managed for years with just a screwdriver. It helps if the plastic fir tree clips aren't too cold (=brittle) so a hair drier may be of use. (Although does it ever get cold in the south?) Try and lever as close as possible to where the clip goes into the door to minimise breaking anything.

Re: Sticky door locks
Cheers Matt. I've always had mixed fortunes with those fixings, even when it's warm! I think age plays as big a part in making them brittle and by definition everything on a BX is 'mature'. Might try one door this weekend to see how it goes.
