I had a friend who worked at one of these fast motorists centres and quite disturbingly they had to meet targets to keep their jobs,. when a car was brought in for an exhaust they had to tell the customer their shock absorbers needed replacing or brakes relining, more disturbingly they were given a squirter with old brake fluid and were told to squirt the stuff on back plates etc. then go and get the customer out of the waiting room to show them the brake fluid leak. They were encouraged to target women with children who were considered much more easy targets.
They were told their wheel bearings had gone which had caused the brake problems and new whell bearings would be required (which were not fitted, discs needed as well as pads anything to boost their targets they had to reach.
This shocking behaviour was a few years ago but I have no doubt little has changed apert from they can now use a computer to rip you off and charge you diagnostic fees and a fortune to turn service lights off etc.

25 years ago my girl-friend (before we married) took her Fiesta to one of those places for a new exhust (honestly cannot remember which brand name). They convinced her that her rear shock absorbers needed changing, she told me that they told her that the rear shock absorbers were so bad that she could be involved in an accident and that she would be prosecuted for cuasing the accident.

I looked under the rear of the car and sure enough there were 2 beautiful new shock absorbers.

I looked at the invoice, and I was surprised to read in very very small print something like "if you are not entirely satisfied with any replaced part, come back within 48 hours to discuss". I went back with her and waited outside just in case, but they made an appointment for her to bring har car back another time when they replaced the new shock absorbers with her originals.

I looked under the rear of the car and sure enough there were 2 old but perfectly OK shock absorbers.

That saved her £70 which was a lot of money 25 years ago !!!

Yeah I think the company that tried the shock-absorber trick was either that one you mention, or the longer name that ends with a good-looking girl (or someone who goes down the gym a lot).
One of those two companies, cannot remember which.

Arse-shite (can't think what that one is) and Quickfit ?

No superinjunctions here yet ;)

I don't know why anyone would go to such a place - I ask around and find out who the local decent mechanics are. My current one has never advised me falsely. I guess if they're any good they don't need to "invent" work.
