Diesels have much superior engine braking than petrol cars Phil. Think about it for a moment. Engine braking is effectively using the engines torque to slow its own internal inertia. The higher the torque, the more braking you have. Diesels on the whole, have more torque per CC than a petrol equivalent. Or I could be completely wrong!! :)

I was gonna say Phil, you drive a diesel don't you? Try taking your foot off the throttle and see what happens! :D

I've never managed to overheat my brakes on the road before, and I used to drive like a right twat!

I have managed to boil brake fluid before on an Ami 8 Estate, but that was more due to under bonnet temperatures and each time I was working it quite hard - once towing a Dyane, and the other loaded up with a weeks camping gear and a couple of bicycles while chasing my brother in his VW type 3 on the A roads of Cumbria! In the end I rerouted the brake pipe from the master cylinder so that it wasn't as close to the exhaust, which solved the problem.

Did that run DOT4? I would guess DOT3 with the age of it?

Philip Chidlow wrote:One thing though, diesels AFAIK don't really 'do' engine braking like a petrol?
I know who told you that, and he's still more wrong than a big bag of wrong things! Diesels have EXCELLENT engine braking, because the higher the compression, the harder the engine is to turn.

Ami 8 would have disc brakes (I think?) and so runs LHM (as my 2CV does). I know someone else with an Ami 8 who cooked the brakes - I think the poorer engine bay throughput of air is to blame. I've only once had a problem in the 2CV. I was doing 70mph down a VERY steep hill. Brake fade was definitely kicking in as some sharp bends approached! Glad I started trying to ease the speed down in plenty of time...

Was this mainly in the valver? Have you tried frequent hard stops in the estate?
I've suffered from BX brake fade on a few occasions - the first few were with Ferodo pads and solid discs after a couple of repeated stops from 70+ mph in a short space of time. Still *some* braking but noticeably less, and smoke.
The only time since I fitted vented discs was descending a twisty mountain road, with lots of slowing from 50-30 mph. No smoke, but quite a lot of fade - QH pads at the time. Not yet had it with OE pads, so I'm convinced that even if they are made in the same factories, they're not the same friction material.

My txd has fantastic engine braking, even going down quite steepish hills like those in Sheffield, i rarely have to touch the brake pedal, the cooper s on the other hand seems to have hardly any, i presume its the supercharger spinning round at high speed?

Yeah the 16v. Only issue I ever had was the steering would sometimes die as the accm and pump weren't the strongest.

I haven't tried frequent hard stops in the estate, as I'd have worked hard to achieve the speed in the first place! I very rarely use the brakes in it, unless I need to stop dead such as in traffic. Otherwise I tend to corner with squealing tyres everywhere!

Yep, all but the earliest had disk brakes ad LHM systems. I have heard of disk brake 2CV's and Dyanes cooking the brakes, but only if the disk cooling shrouds (which take air from the fan housing) have been removed. I've never had a problem with 2CV drum brakes (DOT fluid), including taking the Nomad camper with it's small drum 2CV 'box over mountain passes into Italy fully loaded in 35C heat!
