The 1.4 may or may not spring past the N/A but one thing for sure the N/A will still be going long after the 1.4 has popped a piston or thrown a con-rod through the block!

As long as the 1.9 n/a can out accelerate the dogs when its running on chip fat it has my support. So a race between a greyhound and a n/a. Then if the greyhound can be run over by a 1.4 you know which is the best car! Easy.

It does smell of old engine oil occasionally due to an unfortunate incident with the boot carpet some while back.

I know it's not a straight comparison as Timex has that heavier bodyshell to drag round, and is now running a square port head, but here's my experiences:
Performance - 14 definately, better acceleration, and if you drop 2 gears better overtaking too.
Handling - 14 again, that lightweight engine means no PAS required, and it's just so chuckable, I'd even be happy pitting it against some of the bigger petrol engined models on a twisty road!
Economy - 19D, I was getting 50+mpg round Scotland, just below that at 70mph on the motorway, and 46-48mpg on the commute to work. In comparison, the best I ever got out of the 14 was 40mpg (60-65mph on the motorway), and that would drop quickly to the low 30's if I hit the speed limit. Commuting would get me around 36-38mpg.
Load lugging - 19D again, I towed a mates Ami Super Service Van to Shepton with the 14, and while it did it it really slowed down for the hills, and starts on any sort of incline meant lots of clutch slip. Timex hardly noticed Ripley the 2CV on the back of it!
Overall costs depend on how much you want to use it. If it's a second car, or you don't do many miles, the 14 has to be a serious candidate due to the lower fuel proces, tax and insurance, not to mention that most 14's seem to change hands for surprisingly little money. The Diesel only makes sense if you're going to do the miles.

My original idea was Turbo diesel for long and loaded work - though an N/A would do just the same task. The 1.6 Auto for local and town stuff. Now I have a 1.4 it kind of is more attractive to use, because of the tax break. Remains to be seen how sound the 1.4 is mind you. In some ways there is one to many cars there but with a collectors hat on I could argue I need more. I rely on your experience for eco figs but the fun element of driving does have something to do with it. I know of several areas where we could have an informal thrash as part of an event in the locality. A more organised one could be had via Oxford Motor Club (predominantly Rally/Stage folk).
