I forgot to update the list on my progress.
I did have to get a new (reconditioned) clutch, only £30 from a place in Brighouse. When I took the old clutch plate off, I discovered the female center splines had been mashed by my attempts to ram the male driven gearbox shaft into it off-center. (ooh err missus).
So now I have a nice new clutch and a taller geared BX1.9, so fuel is even better on a run. Although I sometimes have to use fourth gear on the steeper M62 inclines.
One top tip for this project is my discovery of how much help a scaffold pole, a fulcrum toolbox and a ratchet strap can give to a one man attempt at lifting a gearbox up into an engine bay.
Sliding a gallon container of engine oil along the pole gave perfect conterweight control so I could lift the gearbox with one finger from underneath the car.
Thanks to all who helped me brainstorm this problem.
