I do have some options. I have a carport with hard-standing next to my house, though the mud out front is so churned up that the council are talking about fencing off the grassy area, which would mean I no longer had any access to my property! I also have a garage (full of bikes) round the back, off the public road, which I can work in front of, though the whole area is a turning circle are for cars getting in and out of the other garages and perpetually full parking spaces, so it's not ideal, and certainly nothing can be left there for long.

That's better than many people have. Is there enough space to work on the car there (best measure of that: can you open all the doors wide?) or is it "parking only"?

You can open one set of doors wide, and the other set half way, I guess.
