Took photos of the rusty sill to show the extent of the repairs needed.
Also put my Skoda back together after a failed attempt to change the rusted out rear brake pads and discs

Drove mine today for the first time since October, started first time, too! Then rewarded me with an LHM leak from somewhere...

Fixed a pesky little LHM leak, awkward HP connection above the near side rear suspension arm pivot. A fiddle to get to, I had to cut a slot in a ring spanner so I could slide it over the pipe onto the leaking connection and just managed to get an open ender on the other end. A little nip and all is dry again.

Oil and filter change along with new plugs followed by a wash and wax. All ready for the summer but first the newly restored Commer Auto-Sleeper is getting its first outing to a local(ish) campsite for a shake down - and beer :D
I'll need to update my signature picture to show the new colour scheme.
I also removed the sunroof wind deflector as it was chafing and had started to mark the paint on the roof :(

Changed the offside outer driveshaft boot, the little deflector had been rubbing against it causing the rubber to fail. New boot fitted and deflector bent out of the way but still didn't cure the thrumming sound I'm getting, goes up and down with road speed but braking doesn't affect it. bearings appear to be OK, no play and no noise when the wheel is spun off the ground :?

Without load on the bearing, unless it's badly worn, it's not obvious they are failing, they don't always have any perceptible play or noise jacked up. If there is a point when the "thrumming" sound is at its peak and you believe it's the O/S, try taking a left hand bend and see if it increases, conversely, a right hander may decrease it. Reverse applies to the opposite side, front or back, it does not matter.
Prefer it to the Lamborghini, like Signor Gandini!

Changed the RH steering gaiter which had finally split after 35 years. It was much easier than the LH side which I did a couple of years ago.
Also removed evidence of the odd LHM leak cos its MOT day tomorrow.

Looks like it's the front offside wheel bearing. A swift circuit or two around a local round a bout caused the sound to cease, I did think it could be the speedo cable as it oscillates slightly in time with the noise but I've convinced myself otherwise. Bearing kit ordered from Autodoc along with a new outer CV joint as I though the one on the car seemed a little stiff and for the price of them it seemed a no brainer.

Bearings arrived this morning so I started stripping the front offside. Got the hub out without any problem and managed to get the inner race off and, with the hub carrier on the bench, extracted the circlip - but with out a proper extractor I couldn't shift the outer race and just caused an explosion of ball bearings  So another set of tools on order to pull the bearing, this is getting expensive.

I am lucky as my local garage are friendly and let me use their press when I change front wheel bearings. I just press the outer race out. Takes but a few minutes out and in.

That's a good relationship. I've got a bottle jack press but nothing that will fit to push the bearing out so I ordered a set of pullers as shown in Haynes but I'll probably just use the appropriate disc out of the set in the press. In retrospect I should have spent some time making my own out of a piece of plate, still no such thing as wasting money on tools

I am the sort of guy who never throws things away so when I needed to press my first BX bearing out I found a front bearing on the shelf destined for a VW Scirocco I once owned. This bearing was almost the exact (smaller) size needed to push the BX bearing out. Additionally I found a triangular flywheel puller plate for a Mini to apply the load to the bearing.
It was a pity the BX bearing was not of better quality as it only lasted a year!

Got creative with the bottle jack press and got the old outer race removed and pressed the new bearing in, new circlip in place. All back on the car and result - no sign of a the thrumming sound...........but  A couple of miles into the test run it felt like I was running over anti skid ridges as I pulled out of a junction, it stopped as I eased off the throttle but started again as I accelerated - bummer. I re checked the wheel nuts and drive shaft end nut but everything seemed normal with the bearing spinning freely with no play noticeable. I guess it's a strip down again tomorrow :?
And to top it off Autodoc set the wrong CV joint so that's going back.
