I can't see it being on the road, though

My mk1 will be tax-exempt in another 6 months after, but I can't see me owning it by then, which is a shame, as I'd like to take a BX into old-age! It would be one of the first on the UK's road to achieve it, too.

Not quite, nearer three. It will be 40 years old in June 23 but to qualify for tax free status it will have to wait until. April 24. It would have to have been built before 1st January 83 to be tax free in 2023.
The DVLA round up the year the vehicle was built regardless of the month it was built and you can apply the following April.
From the gov UK site.
Historic vehicle tax exemption
You can apply to stop paying for vehicle tax from 1 April 2021 if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1981. You must tax your vehicle even if you do not have to pay.
If the vehicle is 40 years old on January 1st, you have the longest wait, December 31st is best.
Thought I'd mention it as I have seen it crop up a couple of times now and it catches plenty out.
Prefer it to the Lamborghini, like Signor Gandini!

For the avoidance of doubt, I wasn't be pedantic. I was mentioning it because I know few with vintage bikes that have gone to the PO armed with their V112 at 40 years expecting to pay no tax and got a surprise. Sorry if it offended you.
Prefer it to the Lamborghini, like Signor Gandini!

£170? I must be lucky, I paid £165 in April.
As for the oldest BX, I do know of the fourth (I think, I remember reading about it) oldest. It's this! It's very close to an MoT now, there's a brake line at the rear that needs sorting and the interior is a bit of a mess, but it's getting there.

No problem Dave and thanks for your conciliating remarks but they were not necessary. My 1st comment was just a throwaway line as we would all rather not pay the inflated amount that HMG/DVLA charges us.
Mine has been on SORN since March 2020 so thats over £300 that have not had from me. I have been bouncing around in my C3 during the pandemic.
Its good to be back in the BX this month though. Just got to get the aircon working properly now.

I do think of the three costs, MOT, insurance and road tax, the latter the most irritating (regardless of carbon footprint etc.) considering the extreme low mileage most of us do. How often do you see a 30 year old car on the road? I don't think we would see many more even if the tax was removed.

The only car I own that I have to pay road tax on is my '91 Mini Cooper. Since the MOT back in December it's been out once for a blast round the block to get it warmed up. I really do need to use it more

There are currently 5 UK-spec members of the '83 Club (I just coined that). In theory, these are the earliest UK-spec BXs and as such will have all the original specs and components that were lost early on in the BXs life (such as the internal heater blower motor - most BX owners won't even know about that one!; The big, non-adjustable bonnet striker; The spark plug tool etc.)
The five are (because the reg numbers are all easy to find on Google, so I'm protecting nobody by withholding them at the moment!):
A252 RBX - 16TRS - 21/06/83 (not roadworthy)
A476 RBX - 16TRS - 17/07/83 (roadworthy)
A814 VVW - 14RE - 18/11/83 (nearly roadworthy)
A466 GPK - 14RE - 21/11/83 (roadworthy)
A887 VEP - 16TRS - 30/11/83 (roadworthy)

Ooh, that's interesting! The owner wants to do a photoshoot and comparison between my BX and his. I think that I'm right in thinking that the RBX cars were the first ones delivered as Citroen demonstrators and I clearly remember seeing my first (R)BX in Hexham. Probably Wingrove Motors' demonstrator as they had a dealership in the centre of town.
