I am not wealthy either Kitch! Tank fill ups essential for us living 20kms from a servo thing is we start from full and top up to full. Yea I keep good records like Mulley to maximise the range of my vehicles! Easy to spot things going wrong if you topping to full every couple hundred miles.

Easy missed one is Tyre Pressures!!!! 5psi under pressure on your tyres can increase fuel consumption quite dramatically. Good record keeping spots that if your not into Nitrogen tyres or weekly pressure checks.

If you dont want to take on board what Mully and I have said then fine your choice.

I can't see how keeping your vehicles topped up to full maximises your range kiwi. Quite the reverse if you are keeping a dead load of fuel (which is a considerable weight) in your tank when you don't need to. If you fill every 200 miles then you are maintaining approximately half a tank unused at all times.

We have Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert over here; he advises taking off roof rack when unused, removing unnecessary items from the boot and keeping the fuel load low to return the best mpg.

All those suggestions are all supposed to make your car more economical, the only one that really makes the biggest difference is the roof rack or bike rack fitted on the back. Everything else to reduce weight seems to make very little difference, even with a full boot, full fuel tank & carrying a passenger i was still getting within about 1/2mpg of what i am now & the only thing i changed was not having a passenger, so thats 60kg less to haul about, so its nothing to get too excited about imho. Now if i shed everything in the boot, everything in the glovebox, side pockets etc... & only put in a tenner a time, if my fuel economy was going to increas by 5+mpg i might be tempted, but i bet it would be naff all tbh....

Well I've decided to fill the car up, do a few miles and fill it again. If anything it's just to be stubborn over the fact that I think my method works as near as makes no difference as well as going click to click. It'll be interesting to see.

My boot is full of stuff, which is something that made no difference in my MG, but thinking about it the MG had 175bhp. This thing has 75bhp....barely enough to haul itself around, let alone anything in the boot. Driving the 16v today made me realise in normal driving I'm literally tickling the throttle - barely resting my foot on it. In the estate I'm having to give it half throttle away from junctions just to avoid holding up all the more modern, faster stuff.

Truth be told I'm expecting the figures to be around the same. In a weird way I'm hoping I'm right, so as to be right, but I'm also hoping I'm wrong so the car ends up being more economical. Because if it really can't better 30odd MPG there is absolutely stuff-all point to running it. I could run a 1.9 petrol, get the same economy and go a shedload faster with no smoke and no clatter. Course I wouldn't, I'd get something different!

My foot is always welded to the floor in the TXD, i just change up early though, & in the mini like your mg i'm just tickling the throttle pedal for accelaration, but then i don't usually change up that early when i'm having a bit of fun

It'll be interesting to see what your mpg is, i personally can't believe that even a modern petrol on the sort of journey that you've described can even get anywhere near 30mpg, the bloomin mini can scrape 35mpg on a run on the motorway, otherwise its about 25mpg driving economically to & from work which is less than half what i get from the txd.

Saxo VTS was doing 33mpg, and the 16v tends to average about 27 doing that run.

MG barely scraped 20mpg, which is mainly why it was sold. That and the ride....I'm too old for shit like that!

my tgd 1.9n/a returns about 50 mpg on average my t/d average 40's slightly more on m roads. we have 2 identical MAN trucks at work same age same weight, same mileage, one returns 20mpg one returns 16mpg based on averages, why? we dont know, someone once said its the way the fuel pumps are set up. bit beyond my mech know how.

Many years ago I picked a bx estate up from oxford using a bx 19rd, it was given to me with a blown head gasket. I used more fuel going down there at 90+ than i did coming back towing a bx at 50 to 60. The biggest factor above everything is speed.

Teaching most to suck eggs:

As a general rule of thumb, if you have a rev counter, the most economical rpm is 2k.

When cruising, lift the throttle pedal slightly, so as to maintain same speed.

Does make a difference.
