After a quick check on the net, it seems that the designation 'Mud and Snow' has more to do with the tread pattern than the tyre compound, so while in certain conditions they may be better than a summer tyre, they may not be as good as a winter one, although as Mulley says it depends on the manufacturer.

TBH, if you run winter tyres all year, they'll be nackered within the year i reckon

I don't do many miles these days but mine have been on the car since the winter of 2009 - they're the ones with 6mm of tread left.

I'd guess that anthing designed to be good in snow is also likely to be good in mud - my Vredestein Snowtrac 3 are marked M+S

A change of legislation here in NZ meant that running snow tyres all year became a very costly and wasteful exercise. All 4 tyres must be snow tyres and a minimum tread depth of 4mm! Given the areas your most likely to be using them they make the road surface more porous and therfore more abrasive assuming any seal at all and that eats tyres.

Last BX we purchased had some P4 pirelli Four seasons fitted they are now on the rear of the TXD. Wear wise I expect them to last a long time on the rear, how well they work in those adverse conditions it has been pretty hard to say.

It is the Driver that keeps the car on the road by adapting to the conditions not the tyres or the vehicle.
