If you cant mend them yourself I wouldnt, I do like them, especially the S1 cars but they are known to be very troublesome and quite expensive to mend if you have to use a garage!.
S1s have leccie issues, all diesels have head gasket issues (every 150,000 miles!!!!!) but you know overall the diesel XMs I have owned (and still own) are quite reliable. Everything electrical works on my XM, even the sunroof. It just goes and goes - the last problem was a snapped clutch cable - which was easier to fix than the pedal boxes on three of my four manual BXs.
My XM is my daily car, 18,000 miles in my first year of 0wnership, 14,000 so far this ownership year.

True but you would class yourself as "handy with the spanners" where Tom (any myself to a degree) arent, can you imagine how much a garage would charge to do a headgasket on a XM or a new window regulator.

A BX carb fed petrol is a quite simple prospect in comparison.

I am handy with the spanners but a Citroen independent specialist used to working on an XM will charge £1,300 inc Vat to do a head gasket - of course, that would also include an oil change, new water pump, coolant change, new cam belt and auxiliary belts plus a few other things.

yes, and your point is ...

a head gasket would be a once in a lifetime cost, invariably incurred due to lack of coolant change rather than any inherent design fault.

You don't get knackered pedal boxes, rear trailing arm bearings going, or other BX-common issues. It's horses for courses.

A head gasket in real terms is £650 inc Vat if you include the cost of a cambelt service at the same kind of money.

The difference is an XM can sell for more than a BX ever will.

There is no comparison on the driving experience. The XM is better overall and a much more competent car in almost every aspect

it's faster, roomier, better equipped, better seats, and so on. As a reliable everyday car my one fits the bill better than the BX. I've driven 500,000 miles in BXs and I'd rather the XM.

Of course, I shouldn't be saying this on a BX forum! 8)

Hey, i'm learning! I've managed to do everything on my astra so far, apart from the tracking and a bit of welding, it's only been in the garage 5 times (3 of those were MOT tests).

I never really had time to play much with my 14. I didn't have it very long :( Stupid kids on mopeds.

EDIT
It's usually a confidence issue with me, I hate it when bolts shear and leave you stuck until you can figure out how to remove them (usually via help from daddy)
I'm not a Saint, or a James, but a Tom Saint-James!

Paul and I have had requests from people wanting the address so they can go and have a nose, whilst I understand the excitement Syd did ask that we kept the location to ourselves. Paul is going to ring him and ask if and when its convenient for those interested to drop over one weekend and get some bits, chew the fat etc.

Im not trying to keep it to myself but it wouldnt be right for people to just pop up and start wandering around his property unannounced.

Back onto XM's briefly. I've had the 2.1 td VSX for a few months now and touch wood, had no problems. Mind you it does have a service history print off totalling 13 grand.
