Steering Rod End

Post by kiwi »

Near side Failed on it WOF (MOT).

How difficult is this to replace and how much given I can double that price being on the other side of the planet.

The gaitor around it is also damaged

This is where some confusion for me is coming in. Something the garage confirmed for me but yet still makes no sense.

Refer to section 11.19 suspension and steering of the Haynes manaul for the picture.

Basically the gater is split and I was told the joint underneath was worn which I think is refering to the inner Track rod end? I got a feeling this is one of those items the garage is sshowing its not got a clue about.

They will probably be reffering to the ball end being worn not the end where it joins onto the steering rack, any garage would know if it was, it isn't something they ''could not have a clue about''

I supose it could be the inner joint, but then they would probably have informed you that you need a new steering rack.

That was the bit they were indicating to, hence my confusion in the name referance they called it. Otherwise that would be a simple job.

I doubt they understand the simplicity of a BX to have informed me of a complete new steering rack, over here if there is a way to fix whats broken is more often than not the cheaper and simpler solution.

Bugs me a bit that that only 1000km done since last WOF and a thousand before that and no faults on them. One those suddenly its gone :(

Still not go my cost yet.

More likely just suddenly someone noticed it for once. Here in France (MoT equivalent every two years!) you tend to get a long list of advice points on minor stuff, along with a list of stuff which needs fixing within the next two months. I've found if I give them the previous certificate, then lo and behold, the same stuff appears on the new one. If I don't hand over the old one, then according to the testers 90% of it has miraculously fixed itself despite me knowing full well I haven't laid a spanner near the offending article in the previous two years/30,000 miles...

Not sure how much the innner track rod ends are - I didn't even know they existed until a couple of months back when I read a thread on here. Happily the following day I found a couple in a boot sale for a euro each! 8)
If they turn out to be really expensive I could probably dig out a good secondhand one – would be a good excuse to finish stripping my scrap front subframe.

Hi, Kiwi !
Why don't you look in the CATALOGUE (PDF) link, which I sent you (Via a PM on 6/01/11 if you can remember) and then you/we would all know exactly which part your referring to ?

I suggest you need to be looking at page 211 if its a PAS model ?

#2 - Track rod end N/S :- 95 496 044
#2 - Track rod end O/S :- 95 496 045

#3 - Rod Ball joint :- 95 496 440 (Pos 1 = 'Lemforder")
#3 - Rod Ball Joint :- 95 496 439 (Pos 2 = "Ehrenreich")

I take it that your BX has PAS and a Right hand drive model, so if its #3 on the N/S that's Fubared (The side which has the PAS ram's moving connection) you'll also need part #5 as to get to #3 item/part #5 (gets damaged/destroyed when trying to remove them) !

#5 Steering Protector (Rubber Boot):- 91 507 343

So which ever joint needs replacing, it does not need a new steering rack replacement and its pretty obvious the garage/mot test station don't know there 'Arse from their Elbow' (Typical of most garages as in the UK too) so I'd suggest you take you business else where in future where they hopefully do know what there looking at when testing vehicles !

I hope this may be of help to you/others !

:)

First of all thanks for the replys with valuable information.

At this stage of the game we found out from ^^ ^^ that the inner track rod is no longer available...surprise surprise...however a factor part is available at some $120 (60 quid).

This morning got a phone call back from a contact here in NZ for a second hand one and the cost just $50 (25 quid) so going with that.

In summery the TRS has dodged the bullet again, not bad for a none starting car purchased 3 years ago for parts.

I can beat that! Bought the 1985 2CV6 Dolly in 1996 as a non-runner, for parts. Turned out it had spat a spark plug thread, so one helicoil later it was up and running. It's finally died this year, due to terminal body rot - open the doors and you can't close them again...
