H reg GTI 4x4

Post by Kitch »

A guy saw my BX outside the unit today and randomly popped in to see if I was interested in his 4x4 which he\'s selling. He\'s local to me (Fareham) and has owned it 8 years.
It\'s red, has no rust apparently, is MOT\'d til October and has 83k on the clock. The backbox is pretty new and the four wheel drive bit works well.

He\'s decided to get rid and said he would bring it down to the unit for me to have a look at and get some pictures. He also wants me to fix the speedo cable (lower, thankfully!)

It sounds like a really good one, if what he says is accurate. He seemed a decent bloke. If anyone\'s interested let me know, otherwise if he comes back I\'ll advertise it.

Cheers

Sounds interesting. Though doubtless beyond my time/money coefficient. :S

The chap stopped by again today:

H reg, 85k miles approx. Been off the road for at least SIX years! Now has new MOT but is SORN. He rescued it a while back and never got round to using it!

It's red, has white 15in Compomotive Mo alloy wheels and is pretty straight. It's not mint, but it's certainly got potential.

I'm gonna try and get some pics soon if anyone's interested.

He has no idea what it\'s worth, but once I\'ve seen it in detail I\'ll tell him what it\'s worth in my own opinion and he can choose to take that advice or not. I\'m anticipating £700-£800 at the mo, but if it\'s alot tidier than I think it\'ll be then four figures wouldn\'t be unreasonable.

I\'ll head over there and get some pics when the sun\'s out. Weather\'s supposed to be good down here :(

Right, finally managed to get over there today and get some pics and have a nose around:

It\\\'s pretty straight, colours not bad for the year by any stretch and with proper attention I think it\\\'ll shine nice and deep for those who like polishing! Pretty low mileage too, and backed up by paperwork.
Interior\\\'s very tidy, engine runs happily enough (though needs a bloody good itailian tune-up) doesn\\\'t smoke or anything silly. I think the TPS might want adjusting as it\\\'s reluctant to idle everytime you let go of the throttle. More importantly, 4wd system is in good working order and mileage is backed up by MOT\\\'s.

The guy\\\'s had it around 10 years, 6 of which it spent sat in a specialist\\\'s workshop having some 4wd trickery done! He reckons he\\\'s had it on the road about 6months in total!! Selling because it doesn\\\'t get used enough (ya think?!).

He wants to pitch it in at offers around the £1000 mark. Personally, I saw that it needed a door moulding on the o/s/f door (though these are normal BX items) and the exhaust is blowing a bit around the back end, so budget to have a bit made, or learn to weld.

The car itself is nearly rot free. All the pillars are good, roof and sills all good etc. Only bits I saw were the inner wings have just started to rear their heads, under the ABS pump and behind the LHM tank (as usual).

It\\\'s MOT\\\'d until October, but no tax. He\\\'s kept it MOT\\\'d to keep it servicable, if that makes sense?

Clutch was done less than 1000 miles ago, it\\\'s also had the subframes off recently. Quite a few bills for important stuff, though I\\\'d do a timing belt on it personally. I think it\\\'s definately got potential and with the minters getting near £1500, it\\\'s probably a fair starting price considering how rot free it is.

I have got his number but not to hand, so if anyone\\\'s interested give me a shout. The company I work for are pretty good value at hauling cars around the country too, so if collecting it from Fareham near Portsmouth is an issue let me know.

Cheers

It looks tidy. Not too far off from original - (let's see some Speedlines on it lol!). Very good of you, Kitch to do the recce for the benefit of any potentially interested parties! Very community-spirited :D

I'd say it's worth £1000 but I would try to knock off a ton for the cam belt and the fact it's not taxed, but hey. These aren't exactly common!

Do we know what transmission work has been done precisely?

Looks alright, those wheels are not bad either - they're a bit like some Accessoires ones that were available here in Germany and now very rare ( though there's three for sale in France at the moment).

I would really fancy this if I wasn't spending loads on my XM. Really appreciate the opportunity being provided.

Well he basically drove past our unit on his way somewhere and saw the 16v parked up outside, so came and asked if I was interested. I said no obviously (because a 4x4 is no 16v :D) but said I\'d ask around for him.

Transmission-wise, I know it\'s just had a clutch done because that\'s the reason he\'s had it so long....the guy who did the work priced it as an \"as and when\" job, but that probably doesn\'t stretch to 6 years! He had fun and games with the subframe while it was off (spun a captive nut most likely) so that\'s all been done too I\'m told.

From what I could see, the exhaust needs sorting out for the next MOT and it probably wants a few recommisioning jobs done like I say, cambelt, discs/pads, LHM change....nothing major.

Didn\'t get to drive it (didn\'t ask in fact!) but it certainly felt \"right.\"

Todd: Those are Compomotive MO\'s. Popular in motorsport and tuning circles, and with AX GT owners as they\'re one of only a handful of wheels available in the 3x98 stud pattern.

The wheels are probably worth £200-£300 if they\'re putting anyone off. ALOT less than a set of silver Speedlines\'s anyway!

If anyone wants me to go back over a check stuff I don\'t mind, he\'s only over the road. If you bung my boss a few quid he\'d probably let you inspect it on the ramp too.

For anyone who\'d be interested, the chap popped in today to say the car now needs to go as it\'s on his neighbours driveway and the MOT does not have long left.

He mentioned he might take £500 for it! If anyone\'s interested let me know and I\'ll put you in touch.

Cheers
