That's exactly my experience. With the power outputs so similar that it barely matters, the torque output is what makes the difference between the engines. The 1.9 engine is definitely a better towing engine, whereas the 1.8 engine is more fun to drive like your hair is on fire. The 1.8 was a bit lacklustre in the 405, needing to be revved rather too hard for a diesel, but somehow suits the BX fat better. The 1.9 engine was better in the 405, if only because it was a heavier car and needs the increased midrange torque.

I have a standard acceleration test for any vehicle I drive. Accelerate away from a roundabout at the bottom of a certain hill in yeovil, and see what speed you're doing as you pass a roadsign at the crest. A 17TD (note... 17, not 1.7) BX is very fractionally faster than a 1.9TD 405 estate.

Not bad for a 90bhp old diesel with quite low torque figures by modern standards, thank god for its light weight....

Any man willing to argue with a redhead on this matter is braver than I.

Mine will do 0-62 in 8 seconds, on to a top speed of 142MPH

Although with the power up that far it does rather eat cylinder heads and driveshafts.. but yer only live once etc..
Newbie wrote: know that the last BXs had steel where the plastic once was, how much heavier does this make them and does it effect performance?
Erm, well, steel bonnets were available over many years, more late cars seemed to have them over plastic bonnets, but steel bonnets were fitted to many cars over a few years.
The difference in performance because of it I would imagine is almost incalcuable.

If you can change gear fast enough and keep the turbo spinning they do fly. Even with 225k the estate I have will keep up with the GT when its rolling.

I wound mine up to 100 mph (according to the GPS, not the speedo, which said 110ish, so a true 100 mph) last night on the motorway travelling home. It was still pulling. I'd have been surprised if it wouldn't reach 120.

Yes, my ZX does 0-60 in 17 seconds at best, and with a few passengers I can't get it over the 100 mark on a flat road, i.e. the motorway. That's fast compared to what I've had!

Kitch, before my tzd was off the road i wound it upto 115, infact it would have gone faster but was starting to go into the red, could do with a 6spd gearbox.

Even my txd can go 105+, again it seems to run out of gearing rather than engine puff.

Anyone going to fit a 6spd box to theirs :D

All of the above clearly done on a track of course

I trust all this speeding was done on a private motorway?
Dont forget the fuzz could look at this site ya know.

A 6 speed box in a diesel would make it xlower than standard given that the gearing is for a petrol engine etc..
Well, assuming we're talking a pug GTi-6 box anyway.
Cant see how a TD needs a 6 speed box TBH.
A subtle play about with the gearing will increase top gear, and if you get really involved in having a taller diff made then you really dont a 6th cog.
