Another question. Why do people do things like this? I mean what's the point? Do they think it's funny? Do they get paid for doing it ?

If I could meet up with one of these morons perhaps I could ask him/her.
Nicely of course, at least until my patience ran out. (2 mins trust me)
Then I could introduce them to some of my techniques.
I don't think they would do it again afterwards

8) Thanks for that mate. I'm on Vista home premium 32 bit.

I tried running spyware doc with antivirus from the wife's side and it gave me the all clear, which it is of course on her side. When I switched back it was no different.
I noticed during the scan (on my side) the green line displaying progress, is not reaching the RH side as it completes each section, as it usually does.
At the end of the scan, it shows the trojan backdoor whatever as medium risk along with 23 tracking cookies as low risk. When I click "fix checked" again the green line only goes to about 1/2 way, then it says it's shifted them all. But of course it hasn't.

Just a suggestion...

Log on as your wife...

Go to http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php and download their antivirus for vista - I think there's still a free version.

Install it.

Run it or switch of then on / reboot.

Avira should check the whole machine rather than just your wife's files.

The though behind this - it looks as though the virus is aimed at AVG antivirus - I think it would be unusual for it to be capable of getting past more than one antivirus package.

:D Wow. Let joy be unconfined. I just tried on my side again and guess what, all is now clear. Just a message from spyware Doc telling my it had rooted out and killed the monster. It must have been beavering away behind the scenes and sorted it.
I'm in on my side now and all my other stuff is available now, before every time I tried to open anything, it flashed on for a second only to be whipped away and a notice saying it was an infected file.
Anywhooz, it's all fine now. must have been the beer I've been quaffing at a fair rate.

 Still can't get on BXP though.

Glad you sorted it.

I'm not sure exactly how Vista works, but if you can, check what software is loaded at Windows start up. Some of it can be a bit abstract, but if you use common sense and time and google, and trial and error you should be able to eliminate any dodgy entries which would at least speed your computer and eradicate any seeding code.

I'm now intrigued by the BXP. I'd forgotten about it tbh

Seconded!

That's why I use Macs and an Acorn. I only use Windows when there's no choice of avoiding it (like when fixing SWMBOs)

Yes - glad it's sorted.

That was my immediate thought as well  I've got vista on a very expensive HP widescreen laptop and it's the worst computer I run - worse than my 1999 home-built Pentium 166 !

I was running computers harvested from the tip for a while, until the council started putting them in a special place. Seems daft - as Jack Johnson sings, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".

The reason is that the council get some funding tied to the amount of electronic junk they send for recycling. But is something 'junk' just because it's been thrown away? The tip I used to use in Cornwall had a 'shop' which I could never resist. Actually, I think I got a girlfriend a birthday present there.

 I read that last post as, I got a girlfriend there

I don't have any issues with Vista. I had Macafee and IE8 but they argued with each other all the time, so I ditched them both.
I now run a Apple browser Safari 5, and have Spyware Doc with antivirus, also PC Doc pro for cleaning up crap.
The only downside is , since getting shut of IE8 windows won't update anymore, I just keep getting a warning about it at startup and it shows error code 50050008.
The only solutions I have been offered, involve rubbing everything out and starting again, or completing complex tasks that are well beyond my expertise.
So, like the man said, If it aint broke, don't fix it. 8)

You should try BXP ( when it's up again) it's good fun, but don't join if you are easily upset or short of a sense of humour or you really will get the piss taken, but in a nice way

Haha - I got rid of a one there. Choosing the most appropriate recycling category was a bit of a problem - empty gas bottles, toxic waste, in the end I just left her with the old clothes - it's what she would have wanted and she was always going on about visiting Africa

I seem to remember similar issues with Explorer. My solution was to leave it installed without using it. No reason why you can't have as many browsers as you fancy installed. The Windows updater was the final straw that made me move to Linux, I got fed up with all the pirate software messages. Ahhhhhhrrrrrr, pieces of eight, pieces of eight.

Reminds me of when I was younger - I had gone on holiday with my parents only to find that the freezer had packed up while we were away. All the food, including rather a lot of meat was ruined so we had to dispose of it. I can still remember the look on the face of the guy working at the tip when me and my Dad dragged a bulging canvas sack from the back of the car, with blood oozing from it. It probably didn't help when my Dad piped up "Don't worry, it's just the wife..."
