Removing rear wing

Post by toddao »

What's the best way, without damaging the thing? Is it possible?

Cheers! beers

Ideally with a spot weld drill - to avoid damaging the panel behind.

Not easy then..

I think I'll just grind the one out of the wreck GTI with a 'bit to spare' and try to get at it from behind.

Not especially difficult - just time consuming. To elaborate on what I wrote earlier, you need to drill through all the spot welds holding it on. I haven't done a BX wing but the principle is the same on any spot welded panel.

If you don't care about the panel behind then just drill through both panels with a standard drill bit (although a grinder is probably quicker!) On the recipient car presumably you want to protect the panel behind so a spot weld drill (flatter tip to drill the external panel and not the one behind) is handy. Or cut away the wing and grind away on the seam till you reach the panel behind.
Or do what I did when I was younger use a hammer and chisel...took me about 6 hours in a scrapyard, in the snow.

Getting the plastic trim off above the wing without wrecking it is fun aswell..

Also bear in mind that the leading top edge of the wing is brazed around the seam. So you have to chop a bit out.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...
