Rear disc removal

Post by Wooscary »

Hello

I'm feeling like a little disc and pad change, but the rear discs don't have the same ordinary cross head screw holding them on, but rather something I don't really understand.

Any tips on removal of said discs please?

Cheers

It's been a while since I did the rears, but from memory you unscrew the little wheel location pin which has (should have?) something like a 6 or 7mm hex on it to turn it.

Ah so that's what's supposed to be there. It looks like half of it might have some hex flats on it, and the other half is beautifully rounded. I'll see if anything will fit on it. Cheers for that.

Also, potential stupid question alert - I'm guessing there shouldn't be any contact between the pads and discs when brakes are not applied, they are skimming each other a fair bit.

And is 20 quid about right for genuine Cit rear discs?

The only stupid question is the one that's not asked! There will be some light contact, as disc pads don't have any spring to retract them (relying only on the distortion of the rubber seal). There shouldn't be any significant resistance to turning the wheel however.

£20 sounds good for a pair, although I paid £15 for a pair on eBay last time. They rarely need replacing so I think there is a lot of surplus stock around!

There's no real resistance, just a definite sound of them just touching. I'm so used to setting road bike brakes up to be just perfect that it just seems wrong! Ha ha.

Yeah, I've been eBay searching for a while and the 20 quid ones are the only genuine ones on there. Is it worth going with genuine?

Now I'm wondering if they need doing at all, there is a ring of decent rust about a centimetre wide around the base of the disc, should this be a worry?

This is starting to feel like quick fire questioning!

In all the BX's Ive had Ive never needed to change rear discs, as Mat says the do little work, I would, if they are not pitted, lipped or rotten just give them a clean down with emery paper and fit new pads if they are low, unless like me you have a set of rear ones kicking about (I bought them and didnt need them either).

As a little fore-warning for anyone thinking the rear brakes are poor.

The BX and CX share rear calipers and both are very fond of seizing them up.

Hence the rear discs become very very badly pitted through non use mainly and the MOT man has a double fit at MOT time :)

Once free and working, stick a load of weight in the boot once a month to load up the rear brakes and get them moving properly :)

(sorry if this is teaching anyone to suck eggs, but i cant tell you how pi***d off i was when i found my rear brakes were seriously knackered)

They tend to rust away before any actual wear, mine were totally buggered & the started to break up which caused a terrible vibration thudding sound. Gawd knows how old they actually were.

That's interesting, I do have a new vibration/noise which seems to be coming from one of the rear wheels. Hmmm.

Mine only made its present felt when pressing the brake pedal, even lightly the thudding sound was rather loud

Ah, this happens mainly at around 20mph, then 45mph. Initially I thought it was the exhaust blowing a bit, but I'm starting to think it sounds more like a wheel bearing kind of noise, happening at certain vibrational frequencies (am I talking sense?)

To go off my own topic, this noise started just after having had new rear tyres. Now, I don't think it's the tyres (although who knows?), but after removing the near side rear wheel (which appears to be the origin of the noise), I noticed that the little cover which goes over the wheel bearings was missing.
I don't see how that in itself would cause a noise.

Any thoughts or tests I could run to determine possible causes?

Cheers.

The cover that hides the rear wheel bearings is essential to keep the grease in & the crud out.

If you only get the thudding sound when braking then its more likely to be a rear disc or both which have started to break up.

If its an oscillation sound that changes pitch with speed, that sounds more like a bearing??? Hopefully if you can re-fill with grease & get a cover back on it might solve the issue if it is that? I can't see how it could have come off as its fitted on very tight & only a sharp edge can get underneath it to lever it off to get access the the bearings.

Yeah, definitely not just during braking, and the discs don't look that bad really.

I have no idea how it's come off, pretty sure it was there before new tyres, and see no reason why it would have come off and not been noticed at the time of fitting. Odd.

Cheers for the thoughts.

Ok, next question, who has a spare cover!? Off to the wanted section...

Not managed to track down a cover yet, put some grease in for now, which has certainly quietened things done, which is nice to have found the cause.

So as not to start a new thread, as this next question concerns brakes, and goes back to my earlier question about pad/disc contact when brakes are not applied: If I jack the car and roll a wheel, there seems to be a good deal of rolling resistance at the brakes. I've tried with the engine on, so there is pressure etc, and no I haven't left the handbrake on.

Also, nearside front wheel is now making a slight grinding noise, similar to what happened just before it chewed a pad in Spain recently. Is this caliper binding and thus getting through pads at alarming rates? That wouldn't explain why the other wheels seem to have resistance though. Hmm.

I'd like to understand this myself, but don't necessarily trust myself to actually do it, so may go to the garage for an opinion, but not to put too fine a point on it, your opinions are cheaper! :D

Cheers

I was in need of the said cover a couple of years ago but couldn't find any, so I borrowed one, took measures, and turned a couple of moulds on the lathe so that I can press new ones whenever the need arises.

If it is of any help, there are the measures I took and used in making the mould halves:
