Some very good advice has been posted here Paul, even if you find an mot'd car for £300 you really need to save the same again to put right any faults and have some money to sort out faults that may occur in the future,
In your position I would be looking for the following Regardless of make or model.
Find something with at least 6 months mot, some service history and
that dosent need a cambelt change for a few miles .
Perhaps a good older car is better for you than a more modern car (easier to work on) maybe a peugeot 205 or 405 or a vauxhall astra

I'll recommend the astra, and cavaliers are very cheap atm. This early 8v family of engines are known to be very reliable and most are cambelt snapping-safe, so if you find a non-rusty (or one with only cosmetic rust) example then you're likely to not have to spend too much on it to keep it on the road. Don't get me wrong, older, cheap cars will always have gremlins, but some more so than others.

e.g.

MK3 astra's can be had for very cheap and were galvanised so don't usually have serious rust, the 1.4 SPI is a bit crap, but the 1.6 8v is a good engine, and so is the Isuzu TD.

On the cavalier (mk3) front, there are several below £300 on ebay atm, if you can get the 1.7 Isuzu TD even better - great engine.

Or you could go for something like a Micra, or Clio, or a Skoda, 90's Skoda felicia's and octavia's are reliable, and very cheap (personally I quite like the Favorit).

As Mick said, there are loads of 205 and 306's about, bet you could get a cheap not-too-bad one of those.
I'm not a Saint, or a James, but a Tom Saint-James!

if it's at the back like mine Paul, then you could be looking at serious problems
jacksun1987 wrote:Lincolnshires not the best for buying cars. But in the past ive seen tones of cars with mot and tax for 300 pound. There was that bx with mot for 200. Then on the french car fourm. A xantia 1.8 easte for 300.
unless you can fix things yourself, nearly all cars that you buy for £300 are going to cost you a lot of money in labour costs. My present BX, which I bought for £500 in 2004, has now sprung its second high pressure leak in 3 years, both at the back (see my link to Paul296 above). Even I am considering not fixing it anymore, as I will be throwing more and more time at it.

Let me put it this way: if my car had not sprung its latest leak, I was thinking of selling it ... for £300. You might have got a good car from me at a good price, until the leak struck. It's fortunate in a way that the leak has struck now, and if I don't fix it (which I am capable of doing), then it's going to the crusher.

If I do fix it, the inner wings need welding, the car has "only" done 80k miles but it's 20 years old and the clutch will need replacing very soon too. So if I fix the leak, get the wings done, replace the clutch, it will still only fetch between £300 to £500. It's not worth my time as I can have my mother's J-reg Suzuki Alto for nothing, £130 annual tax, 50mpg, mint condition, probably worth .... wait for it Paul .... £300 with no work required for a couple of years and far far simpler than a BX.

If you want cheap motoring, that is the sort of car you want to get, but you won't find it on ebay, it will be lurking in a garage of a friend of a friend, or a friend of a relative :)

Luckily it's not. It's just forward of the B pillar on the near side so pretty accessible by the looks of it . . . I hope (gulp  )

For all practical purposes that does look like a very persuasive option, but there is one glaring problem that I just can't seem to step around; you'd be driving a J reg. Suzuki Alto

 It's amazingly simple under the bonnet, even simpler and far cheaper than a 2CV. For anyone who wants cheap and simple motoring, this meets the spec

I found this 4-door (like our one) on the internet, also a 2-door Dutch one, I might post a pic of under the bonnet

Here's hoping you got lucky Paul. 12 months ticket - so someone believes in it and it looks tidy enough. I do sympathise with your dilemma when you're on a tight budget; take a risk on a car you really love or drive around in a baked bean tin - that would hardly raise your eyebrows if you twatted it - because it's 'sensible' and 'practical'. Personally, I've never really been a big fan of 'sensible'! 8)

It certainly looks nice enough Paul. I had a 1.9td LX in exactly the same colour. I didn't have much luck with it, but my brother had a base model 1.9; he paid 200 quid for it, drove it into the ground and never had a days problem with it - so you never know!

I've got a spare set of those wheel trims somewhere. I'll stick 'em in the boot and bring them to the X rally - yours if you want them?

About as simple a Xantia as you'll get: not Hydractive 2, and nice 1.9 TD. Well done. Should do you good service. Check the front strut tops though :)
