I now have variable intermittent wipe, and it must be the simplest modification possible. Simply find a VW group car from the late 90s, and look in the fusebox for a tallish black relay marked 99. Then substitute this for the blue wiper relay in the BX fusebox. Job done!
To vary the interval you flick it on to intermittent, then back to off. Once the screen needs wiping again after X seconds, put it back to intermittent and the interval will be X seconds - I think up to 30. Default is 6, which is reset when you turn the ignition off. Also, the number of wipes when you wash the screen is varied depending on how long you pull the stalk for - i.e. a quick flick will just give 1 wipe but a proper wash will give 3 wipes.

I followed your advice and am now sporting a black eye! I found a nice Golf in ASDA carpark but the owner went nuts just as I was putting the blue relay back in for him

£16.50 to have a intermittent wiper you have to reset every time you use it,
Dont they have scrap yards where you live Kevan

would it be worth wiring it to a permanent live instead of an ignition controlloed one so it "remembers " the setting ?

New delivered to the door for £16:50 or spend hours travelling to and scavenging round the scrap yard looking for a second hand one that might not work????? £16.50 everyday of the week in my book Mick!Mickey taker wrote: £16.50 to have a intermittent wiper you have to reset every time you use it,

You don't have to reset it everytime you use it just when you want to alter the default time of 6 seconds + the luxury of choosing a single quick wipe or tripple wipe in washer mode.

Having just changed to a valeo wiper ( £10 from halfords ) I would deffinately agree the single wiper is now more than adequate.electrokid wrote: I think the single wiper performance is quite dependent on the make of blade used - I currently have an oversized Valeo which I, and others, find very effective.
The head of the valeo wiper is quite chunky but it works really well.
When I get my pocket money I will change the rear one .

Finally, a use for VW!

shshsh - don't tell Tim

Oh ok then - vertical C pillar on the estate so that it doesn't have the usual look of a lump of metalwork stuck on the back of a saloon or hatchback. Bodyshell to be 5" wider and possibly a bit longer as well. But this is the 'dream' BX thread, not the 'realistic' BX thread.

Wow. Liking that mod Mr F! Now I just need to find a scrapyard...
