Snow day!

It's a snow day for me today, we have about 2 maybe a bit more inches down here in the south west. Had to scrape about half a ton of the stuff of the BX this morning. In all honesty I did try to get to work, but I nearly didn't get up a hill that is just before the main road (A303 then A37), and seeing the dual carriageway I turned around and went home! There was traffic in single lanes, and a few cars scattered about the edges of the road abandoned.
I did a fair amount of wheel spinning but I was surprised quite how grippy the BX was, even if it was spinning it still kept going and didn't really slow down or veer to one side. Wasn't brave enough to venture above 2nd gear, mainly because the tyres on it are quite old and are firestone energy saving types so aren't brilliant, even in the wet - so cannot be good in the snow!

If I still had my astra I wouldn't have even got up the hill the BX did (just), that car wasn't good in the snow at all. I'll just go and put the kettle on

Best be safe bud. Be a lot better with chains, then most 2wd cars would be.
Snow hasnt started here yet so ime off out in mt TZD shortly.Only a short journey though.

It's horrific here. Really windy so it's drifting all over the place. Even the gritter seems to have given up. Was wondering about testing the grippiness of the winter tyres but I think I'd be better off inside with a nice cup of tea.

The Granada would be all over the show of course - 150+ bhp at one end and all the brakes and the weight at the other and tyres that have seen better days, so I'm glad I've got the BX back from its gearbox repair - that's decent in snow and has snow tyre fitted

For today... I've already cancelled shelf-fitting in the kitchen because that would mean venturing outside to do the sawing so I guess the options are... duvet day / maybe watch my 'collectors version' of Avatar - maybe in the living room with its quad sound system.

But then it's Friday... I usually do ready meals during the week and have a good cook-up at the weekend and I need some fresh veg - so maybe a trip to Waitrose later (snow's not deep enough to show off yet )

I make my living out of driving in the snow! Damn I miss beig back in the UK about now.

Over here in NZ you tend to hit black ice before snow and even then the snow is covering ice especially after they grade the road. What you do is wait an hour and let mother nature melt it! Things change real quick on the lower altitudes. As for tyres well said this before low tread not going to help you and one thing they did do here is make snow tyres illegal if not on all 4 corners and minimum 4mm! Personally I find ordinarry tyres with less than that ungrippy anyways and even with full tread well better than without. But I chain up as soon as I reach a gradiant! Trick is to keep going your stuffed if someon stops in front of you.

Protect those BXs though stay off the road if there are other idiots on it!

I find its the other idiots out and about that can cause the most problems. Went out this am in the BX and whilst i was out, down it came. Made it home ok but came across loads of people driving down country lanes all over the road so ime glad i made it home safely. Wouldnt consider going out now except in the 4x4 but that would be a waste of fuel as ime all sorted here. Just going to sit in front of the telly and pile logs into the Rayburn.

Thats impressive given that air pressure at sea level is 14.65 psi

That's a baffling response. Are you saying it's impossible to have tyres with less than 14.65psi in them? I know for a fact it isn't and here's another random nugget - the recommended front tyre pressure for a Renault Dauphine is 15psi. 15!

When you measure tyre pressure conventionally you're measuring it relative to the atmospheric air pressure - so using the example numbers above 10 psi is actually 24.65 psi absolute pressure.

Had a great deal of fun driving my 4x4 around tonight at much greater speeds that any BX could achieve in similar conditions. Back to sanity now, awaiting a further dump of snow tonight.
