Hydraulic Flow Distributor Leaks

Post by Gordon »

Greetings from downunder. I've a 1989 BX 1.9TRS station wagon, power steering, with 196,000 miles on the clock and requiring regular hydraulic fluid top ups. The fluid is leaking from the flow distributor "frost plug" looking parts. Taking it all apart they have O ring seals, so hopefully simply replacing those will stop the leakage. However I can't find any exploded parts drawing for the flow distributor or parts numbers for the seals or other internal parts. Do these exist - if so can I please get a copy, and parts numbers, and is replacing the O rings a successful method of stopping the leaks?
Thanks for your help. Gordon

Hi Gordon

Have a look here: or just do a search with FDV and have a look through some more old posts.

http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic ... &hilit=FDV" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I just cleaned both mine off in situ with brake cleaner and sealed the end caps externally with PU Sealant, it can only be I low pressure leak pass as neither of my cars have ever leaked since.

Thanks very much for your advice and location of previous discussion on the FDV. I'd done a search for "flow distributor valve" but should have used the abbreviation. Unfortunately the arrowed "do not touch this screw" I've already removed and refitted. I had one plastic filter intact, the other disintegrated. I'll see if I can track down a repair kit, or just the O rings.
Cheers, Gordon

Never done it, but if and when I have to I'd try and match up the O rings from an engineering suppliers. These (who I use) have got some information about the common materials, but I don't know which were used in LHM systems.

quite common for something missing in translation with service citroens description's,

also persons fully dismantling the FDV must be aware it will require re/calibrating on re/assembly

How do you re-calibrate an FDV? Is it do with the spring tension or something else?

Last time I reconned a FDV I found the filters were ruptured too so I think this is normal. I renewed the end cap orings with some which are supplied for aircon connections. These are easily obtainable from aircon type suppliers. They were size 8 green ones I seem to recall.

But if you have undone the bypass screw settings you will have to reset it by trial and error to get just enough pressure through to give you sufficient , but not too much power steering assistance which should not be too difficult to achieve I suppose.

it was always said the cone filters are destroyed after people have pinched the pipe seals on re/fitting pipes into the FDV, then the parasitical of rubber are forced through the filters under system pressure,

i think the FDV is calibrated on a test rig with pressure gauges in circuit,

I managed to get a repair kit to my surprise so obviously they've been sitting on the Citroen agents shelf for many years. But at NZ$128+VAT for seals, retaining springs, O rings and 2 filters there's been a huge mark up. Next time I'll try to get O rings from local engineering suppliers.

whet does that equal to UK pounds

as even though it comes up as NFP below is what it used to be charged out at

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
95669034 BALL JOINT KIT 23.18 GBP 27.82 GBP 27.82 GBP

and citroen call it a ball joint when thats not what the drawing shows

G'day kiwi, no I'm not on Facebook but I do write the articles for the BX column of the National CCC magazine. Hence the regular maintenance I'm doing provides plenty of things to photograph and write about - sunroof complete removal and overhaul, heater matrix removal etc, and front rollbar movement disconnecting the front height corrector. If you're in the Cit club contact me through that or I think you can do an access to my email via this forum. Cheers.
