Steering rack boots

Took the TXD and the TRS in for the Biannual inspection this week. Would you believe both passed but got advisorys on damage to the steering boots! The TXD on the drivers side the TRS on the passenger side. Probably have to do them both prior to next check in 6 months.

So how easy a job is that to do?

Only other thing I noted during the test is actually solving the mystery of the mysterious wheel squel on the TXD, noted the handbrake cable was rubbing on the inside of the wheel rim on lock. So thats another got to get sorted job.

Not bad for couple 21-23 year old cars with 300,000kms and the other 196,000 miles clocked.

Hi bud,
the drivers side is quite easy but the passengers side is a real bastard to do. Really need a third hand and they all need to be small.
However, make sure you use a rubber one and not one made of plastic.

Cheers Andy, Does wheel alignment need to be done as well? Sounds obvious really just checking.

TBH I have not seen the state of the boot on the TRS so maybe less of a problem or should say rush to do. Whats the implications of not getting it done...once again obvious question?

Actually no, you dont have to realign the wheel if you carefully remove the track rod end and put it back zackly the same. Malcolm will give you the correct procedure ime sure.
Not getting it done will allow all sorts of crud to get into the steering system, ime sure causing it to leak and ultimately fail.
I ran my TZD with the nearside boot in bits for about 6 weeks with no adverse signs. Didnt use the motor much though, have to keep them all going on a rotation. The ones on Mollie are both shot to bits so they will need doing if i restore her.
Some say that doing both boots is easy but having seen an expert stuggle ime not so sure about the nearside one. Just a thought, you drive on the other side of the road dont you? If so, then it will be much easier for you on your drivers side.

well it is recommended the tracking is checked after dismantling the track rod ends, but i feel as long as you measure the length/s before and after, you should be able to get it back as near as dam it to were it was,
so as long as the tracking was correct before hand,

it still wouldnt hurt to have it checked afterwards, by a garage you trust, and NOT a tyre/exhaust shop

Haha yea now thats a contradiction here the Garage we did trust for our non BX neglected to tell us to get the tracking realligned the result was two front tyres that look great on the outside and grip less on the inside after a few thousand kms.

We have steering and suspension specialist locally did not do a bad job on on the BXsin the past. Only snag he had was model not listed so he hoped the 19GTI specs worked. Prettu much everyone goes to him to get tracking done.

While we are at it not sure if its me after driving another car but the steering feels heavy (yes tyres checked) I was thinking the TRS was a bit light but now not so sure. Thinking FDV or maybe power steering ram.
