pug 406 engine into a bx
i have a chance to purchase a 96 pug 406 1.8 16v, XU7JP4 engine (accident damaged very tidy pre front end write off) for a few beer tokens, mileage 90k serviced and new clutch 6 months ago still runs/drives sweet complete car, will this engine/box fit into a bx? mounts look very similar position to a bx, anyone had any experience with such a swap? with the intention of fitting it into the currently redundant 1.9n/a tgd, i assume i will need to use a hyd pump and mount from a petrol bx/xantia. your thoughts. complications? subframe? driveshafts? or more hassle than its worth.

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
Not done this myself, but have looked into similar conversions so here's a few points to consider:
Check the dimensions of the 16v head to make sure there's sufficient clearance.
If you fit a Xantia pump you may have to get special pipes made up, although I've been told this pump is a better one than the BX unit.
Also check your insurance first - some companies are insisting such conversions are done professionally.
I assume the 406 has similar diameter wheels to the BX, otherwise the gear ratios may be all wrong.
If you decide to go ahead, good luck and keep us posted on progress.

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
citsandcycles..yes looks like this is a goer, purchased for £50 whole car, tho the 406 has 15 inch wheels i intend to use the 406 gbox as well, have done some research and it looks as tho the bx driveshafts can be used and could prob utilise the gbox linkages etc, certainly looks as tho its a probability. tho a 16v head it seems quite small on the dimensions-not as big as a 16v bx so looks likely it will physically fit in the engine bay, need to take some proper dims but being a basic xud7 type lump cant see y not. as for plumbing im sure plaedies can assist making pipes up as its only the h/p supply to the fdv that will be different, exhaust manifold will also need to be adapted in some way but cant see this causing major probs, as for insurance well..........as far as im concerned it will be professionally done. the lump itself is not that indifferent from my gti therefore cant see any issues with subframe/mounts and clearances. could be a nice spring/summer project.

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
this depends on which Xant pump you choose,rutter123 wrote: as for plumbing im sure plaedies can assist making pipes up as its only the h/p supply to the fdv that will be different,
very early type = similar system to the BX with an FDV in circuit
later type = 6+2 dose not use a FDV as the part of the pump directly powers the steering,
in this case there will be more re/routing/plumbing

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
be careful and make sure you consider things like whether an immobilizer is fitting to the 406 - in which case, the Engine ECU, the dashboard and the ignition lock assembly may all be paired up together. I'm not saying they are - just in some vehicle of that age - they are!. Steve

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
yes it does have the keypad immobiliser fitted but no code is needed to start the car, guess its been bypassed in one way or another, i have a good friend who is an auto electrician so this shouldnt cause any significant problems hopefully, had this on my 96 xantia which was just left in service mode and was ok for several years. this side of things is a bit out of my league but im sure there are ways around it for someone in the know.

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
as it has/had a key pad immobiliser the coded ignition key does not come into it,
as the key pad immobiliser is behind the armour on the back of the pump,
even if the immobiliser was still in play you can just de/armour the pimp, and remove the electronics hidden inside it,
then just run an ignition switched live feed straight to the solenoid shut off,
i did this to my old R reg TD XANT with the pump in situe

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
so would i be right in thinking the immobiliser just shuts down the power supply to the fuel pump? in which case bypassing it would be a simple matter of fitting a relay from the ignition to fire up the fuel pump? or does the immobiliser also shut down the ecu?

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
I'm no expert myself, but if you couldn't bypass the immobiliser, Could you just nick everything necessary out of the donor car, wire it all up & tape the chip out of the key to the code reader? Then theoretically it should run.
Or you could incorporate the immobiliser in to the car properly & have new keys cut (using your existing locks) with a chips inside them & thus making your car harder to steal.

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
A question nobody's asked yet, but why would you want to put that engine in a BX? It's a lot of work for no gain. If you want speed, a GTi or 16v will be quicker. If you want economy a diesel will be better (and a TD probably wouldn't be far off in terms of poke). And if you want more refinement, you'll have to get rid of the BX

Re: pug 406 engine into a bx
purely for a project to see if it can be done, i already own a gti 8v and a tzd turbo, project car is a n/a diesel which ive had a few years, ideally a t/d lump would be preferred but try to find a good one.

Loads of 1.9TDs around, a quick rebuild should see a nice one?rutter123 wrote:purely for a project to see if it can be done, i already own a gti 8v and a tzd turbo, project car is a n/a diesel which ive had a few years, ideally a t/d lump would be preferred but try to find a good one.
