Have you made sure that the cable is clipped on to the back of the speedo head itself, sometimes they can come adrift, they need to be pushed on to the back of the head fixing and the plastic locating collar on the cable correctly pushed towards on to stop it coming off.

I did not do any of the work by myself, but I had a garage to do it, because I wanted to spend more time with my family and also it was really cold and I don't have a garage.
I will either try this by myself or when I return to the garage ask them to do.
Thanks Tim

Ive had a speedo go on me before on the 16v, its easier just to change the whole lot, than faff about swopping dials.

today I had a surprise.
Although the speedo does not work, the miles counting does ! I did not even look at this before., it did not work before the new cable went in but now it does.

If the odometer works but the speedo itself doesn't then it's the speedo head that's busted.

Ok
just one more question before I give up on getting this fixed.
Are new or used speedoheads easily available

Yes they are, they are interchangeable, just finding the right one for your car (petrol non GTi with a rev counter), I am sure someone will have one, then its a case of altering the mileage on the donor clock (its surprisingly easy) to match your car.

The mileage drum just pops out, so you can put the correct one for your car into the new speedo head :) Remember to put some sellotape onto the drum tumblers to stop it from moving off its correct mileage & once popped in, just remove the sellotape & voila.

So, after finally removing the speeedo cable and getting it sent to speedy cables they have informed me that, A the speedo cable is working fine as far as they can see and two, they cannot make a replacement anyway because they need specialist parts. They say it is because the bit that connects to the head unit is plastic and breaks if they try and fit it onto a new cable. Has anyone else had this problem?

Just realised I never wrote what happened to my speedo after that, about 2 months after all that, with new cable but only miles counter working...then suddenly everything working fine and it has worked fine for at least 6 months now..
glad the car fixed itself

ummm - "speedy cables" not being able to make new items is worrying - I think that means old stock or used is he only option - anyone know otherwise? Mine has gone but luckily I have a used spare.

He said that ot was because of the plastic clip that fits onto the back of the clock. When they taken off they break and they aren't able to make those parts. They can still make the cable part but I suppose that's no use if the connector gets broken in the process.

I "repaired" mine and refitted today only to find it still doesn't work. Tomorrow I'll split it at the joint and spin the top section while an observer (missus?) watches the speedo I can start eliminating things then.
