Clutch thrust bearing carrier - 1.9D.

Post by paulwitchard »

At the moment the engine and box is out of the 1.9D, failed the CT (french MOT) due to oil leaking everywhere.
The thrust bearing carrier is causing a lot of swearing at the moment, its the ball and socket type. The original one fell apart when it was being taken out, and the new replacement courtesy of Oscaro broke on reassembly. As the connection between the plastic socket and the metal arm appears to be a bit 'mickey mouse' is it possible to change to the later type with the bar going up through the side of the box - the blanking plugs appear to be there in situ. I've got the thrust bearing for both types.
Many thanks for any assistence.

So do you mean changing the whole clutch operation to the turbo diesel type? Doing away with the push rod.

If so yes it can be done if you have all the parts Inc the clutch arm and sleeve but will obv involve changing the clutch cable as well which can be a headache in itself as access is limited moreso on a diesel.

That was what I was thinking of doing, I think I can lay my hands on most of the bits.
At the moment the engine bay is completely empty, so access for the clutch cable is as 'easy' as it will get. Its a left hand drive, not sure if that makes any difference.

LHD is a lot simpler for clutch cable, which is shorter than the RHD version.

In which case if the eng/box is out then why not, the TD set up is much better and less complicated.

Thanks very much for the parts lists - I'll have a good look in the morning.

In short; Yes it can be done.
As others have already said; You'll need the TD type clutch arm & bushes for the gearbox. You'll also need the clutch cable, & the other type of clutch release /thrust bearing, they differ between the 2 types of bearing carrier.
It would also be advisable to find some sort of cover to plug the open hole left in the front of the gearbox.

Hope that helps.

I may have all the parts you need if you can't source them.
Apart from a (lhd) clutch cable.

Its an easy job as others have said. It would be worth having a look at the crankshaft seal and the sleeve and seal on the gearbox input shaft as both of these can leak and you mentioned CT oil leak failure. The clutch is much smoother when converted I have done it to my GTi and am pleased with the improvement.

Made a bit of progress with this - but a couple more questions!
I've managed to sort out the operating arm, had to drill out the threaded rod between the operating arm and the shaft, then reweld up the holes, then drill it out again - that kept me occupied with a dremel for the best part of an afternoon!
Next problem is that the original ball which held on the socket on the old type operating arm is now in the way. How does this come out (apart from the bodgers method of battery angle grinder).
I obtained the new type arm and shaft from an old BX TD box, is it worth changing over the 5th gear cluster or will I finish up with a big gap between 4th and 5th? We live out in the sticks, so the car gets very little town use, but does have the occasional outing on the autoroute.

Doesn't that ball fixing just unbolt somehow. I know it comes out easily cos I have done it but can't accurately remember how - it might be a splined interference fit.
Have you got the white plastic bushes for the arm you can get new ones if your ones are worn.

The TD fifth gearing difference would be a gearing of 41.69kmh per 1K revs compared to the present 36.24. The fifth gear would be quite high for that engine I think. It might be a bad move on a 1.9 diesel. Its on the petrol injections where it makes a difference as they have more power available to avoid continual changing down to fourth.

Splined, thanks Jaba - a bit of a warm with the blowlamp, and I started tapping with one of my smaller hammers and a drift, and after a bit of persuasion out it came.
Think I'll leave the ratios as they are.
