What bits need doing for servicing a 1.7 TZD?

Post by MULLEY »

Hi, as my technical expertise is gradually increasing, i feel confident that i could service my car, however i would be grateful for some advice on what needs doing.

I presume that its an oil change, replace oil & fuel filters, & air filter? is there anything else that needs doing as well?

The handbook says that it needs servicing every 6k, is this correct? reason for asking is that a few people seem to do it a bit earlier than this.

Is there any specific oil that i should be using on an engine which is approaching 100k, is it worth using a fully synthetic oil or not?

Any hints/tips are gratefully received, it will need a service in the next 1k as i am now probably doing approx 250 miles a week, soon adds up.

6k is right - little point in doing it more often if you are doing proper runs, and reasonable mileage. I do 6k oil and filter changes and 12k fuel and air filter changes on my 'other' XUDT engined cars. Don't bother with a fully sythetick oil - it will probably just run out! I use a 10W40 semi-synthetic. The engine seems quieter and goes better on this - although this is probably entirely subjective! If no record change the air and fuel filters though. Service is also a time to inspect tyres, get the wheels off and check the brakes etc etc....

For a more extended service, you should be looking to change the LHM and clean the filters if no record of when it was last done. When was the coolant last changed, aux belt, cam belt.... the list goes on
I NEED a BX TD.

6000 mile intervals is OK if you are using the car regularly - not if it takes you 3 years to do the mileage - when calendar intervals are better.

Keep an eye on the gearbox levels and of course normal service items. The official schedule doesn't include much lubrication etc - but a thorough inspection of a car as old as a BX is always advisable as is dealing with all the minor problems that arise.

Also worth lubricating all the odds and sods like door hinges and stays, bonnet lock, gear linkage , height correctors (very important) and so on.

Cheers guys, Ken kindly helped me sort out most of the items you mention so they wont need doing for a while, so i guess it will only need new oil & an oil filter, marvellous, cheap as chips......''

The only thing i dont know much about are the height correctors, i will have a look in the Haynes manual, if i dont understand it, i may be back for some more advice.... cheers for the mo

Just use stout axle stands and work with the car in low. clean everything off and then lube it all up with thick grease to keep the crud out. The HC itself has a very short travel, less than 10mm so don't expect much movement. It is best to release the bolt on the pressure regulator before fiddling with it to avoid fatal surprises. While you are at it, consider the tick time. If below 30 seconds, reseat the valve ball, (one smart smack with a brass drift) before renewing the accumulator sphere. The longer the tick time, the more times you can use the brakes if the HP belt breaks! If you have an unknown cam belt mileage, change it. £15 and some skinned knuckles versus game over for the engine.

Cheers for that Tom, already had the cambelt renewed & a new HP belt as well, the only one i didnt get done was the alternator one as the geezer at local motor factors sold me the wrong one. Got a replacement though, just havent fitted it yet, although its in the car just incase.

Accumulator seems ok as tick time isnt below the 30 seconds, its all looking good for doing minimal work....

Oil filter will be standard Purflux unit, DO NOT get a Halfrauds oil filter, you'll regret it, and your engine will not thank you for it.

The fuel filter issue, right, first, how old is your car?
Is the filter on top of the stat housing or mounted on the O/S inner wing near the LHM tank?

If it is near the LHM tank, is the primer button facing directly upwards or tilted towards the front of the car??

Its a 1993 model, the fuel filter is housed away from the lhm, its near to the pump & is a black plastic cylinder which has a cover with some bolts on, it sits up rather than laying on its side.

Is there only 1 type of purflux filter for BX's or are there different ones for diesels & petrols?

Er hope that is enough of a rubbish description?

Yep, it's all good!

The oil filter is the same for any XU engine, but get a Purflux!

The fuel filter is known as a "top hat" filter.

If theres a GSF near you the part numbers from them are as follows:
Oil filter N12045, I think they are about £5
Fuel filter N12116, I think they're about £4

Hope that helps!

No mate. They are for the earlier type cannister filters that are attached to the O/S wing.

The filter you need is very short, and has a metal "lid". If you ask for a fuel filter for a diesel ZX or Xantia, they are exactley the same!
