Living in a terrace, at the moment, I sadly don't have any off road parking space and need to swap the engine on our TD estate after the recent lucas pump disaster.
I usually go to my ever suffering parents 30 miles away to do most repairs but I know this big repair is going to take me more than 24 hours, at least!

I've found a place in Bristol that offers secure outside storage with power and tool storage for £50 pcm or inside to £100 pcm (but their inside space in full) - haven't visited yet but I think they're pretty popular with camper van owners, etc - up in Horfield somewhere IIRC... Month in month out too...

If you rent space, what do you get for your money?

If you can get that sort of space i'd go for it at £50, i've struggled for ages to find anythin! I'm currently paying £30pcm just for a storage space and i can't even work on it there!

Incidently, what's actually up with the engine?

Boost diaphragm split, caused big revs when the engine was cold - partner didn't know WTF was going on, turned the ignition off and waited until it stopped...
I replaced the diaphragm and it still runs and seems ok on idle, but blows out lots and lots of blue smoke on boost and compression is too low on number 4... that's as far as I've got... just looking sad outside the house at the moment..
I've got a spare head and turbo but both will need rebuilding -

I rent various spaces as follows:

2 single lockup garages in Yate, with no facilities, for £45/month each
1 open parking space in Tockington with no facilities for £20/month
1 Barn space near Warminster large enough to store up to 14 vehicles (depending how big they are), with power available and able to work there, for £143/month

This last one is exceptional, and is 45 miles from me, but the cost is worth it, and the farmer is great!

For a urban area I'd say this space is good value - go for it

Wow, that sounds really good, I'm not tied to being urban, you don't want to sublet one or two BX spaces by any chance?

Sorry, just spent the day shuffling everything closer together so that I can move the series one down there to free up the driveway for the GS.

I'll ask the farmer when I'm next down there if he has any spare space.

Regarding garage size - it seems the standard single garage size in the UK is 8' x 16' --- seem some possibilities near here at £40 pcm but no power etc... Also an 8' x 18' for £50 pcm... Seeing as I'll need to get the car up, store a few bits and pieces is an engine swap feasible in a lockup that size?? I'm thinking probably not

It's possible, but not easy. Work down the sides will be cramped, all the smaller stuff usually ends up in the car, and you'll struggle to get the engine in the garage once it's out of the car. The 18' garage sounds a better bet, as at least you should be able to get the engine on the floor in front of the car once it's out.

I rent a council lock up (have done for 16 years) which constantly goes up in price, its a concrete garage with no power, lighting and is a little damp but for £25 a month its good value. I also rent two (and get one free) spaces at a local(ish) car and caravan storage place which has power, lighting, 24 hour access and is bone dry but this costs £475 per space per year and I have to pay each each bill in two halves so leaves a rather large dent in ones pay packet every 3 months!

HaHa, you remember it well. I think i've got even more crap in it now than last time, just need to organise it all better to actually make room to put a car in it
