Still got to get the hotels/campling booked, and wil have to soon as prices are on the rise! Glad I booked the ferry a couple of months ago, prices have increased by a fair bit recently. Got plenty of jobs to get done on the GT too... A trip to Southways Automotive should sort a fair number of these though.

Generally there's no need to book camping (I'm coordinating the booking of the site Le Roustou) ...Hotels: Book using a card to secure the booking but use Flexible option (which costs a bit more but worth the peace of mind) which only charges you if and when you take the room.

As mentioned Phil as I don't speak the language well we will be shadowing you! (as per 2012).

I would get the ferry's booked guys asap as other hotels will be available the crossing maybe wouldn't be.

For those vaguely interested, this is a preview of the guide being printed for the entrants to the Challenge. It doesn't display that well in Chrome but is fine in Safari or on the iPhone/iPad.

Ahead of the last Challenge I initiated this discussion https://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... =3&t=20512 on European breakdown cover for older cars which was pretty inconclusive particularly if one wanted something reasonably priced.

Move on two years things have improved with both Footman James and Adrian Flux providing more affordable breakdown cover which includes Europe. As I was going to insure the BX with Adrian Flux I took out their breakdown cover. As my BX is utterly reliable (!) I cannot comment on how good the service is but unlike the 2015 Challenge and the ICCCR I'm glad of a little extra peace of mind whilst abroad. Might be of use to some. Especially for any XM owners intending to join the Challenge...

I am with the RAC, I paid £80 for a weeks European breakdown for the 2012 (which I never used!) but I will do again even with Master Mechanic Mr Boxall with us,.

Le Roustou : I went past the site yesterday by train. It looks a bit deserted at the moment but its location is just as attractive as ever. At the moment the lake is quite low, it looked possible to walk out to the little island with a church on it and the surrounding mountains are snow covered.

It only opens May 13th-on I believe, so it will probably be quite dormant... As we arrive on the 5th June, we'll be some of the first guests I think. The season won't have got into its stride. Will we see you then - or are you hoping to rendezvous with us in Besançon or Sallanches?

Just in case anyone else hasn't booked their ferry crossings when I booked ours tonight at https://www.aferry.co.uk we got a 20% discount. Seems to be just on the Dover - Calais/Dunkirk routes though. Without wishing to particularly endorse AFerry I have used them several times previously. See you all at Besancon when we catch up with the Challenge.

And we'll all have to remember to get postal votes for the General Election when we are away!
