Most old diesels can, what i believe is more important than the engine is the type of pump it uses. If its a bosch one, then its probably fine, however, seeing as its winter start with a lowish solution of approx 10% veg oil & 90% diesel/derv, then gradually increase the solution to a max of 20%.
In summer you can run higher concentrations. Not tried this myself, i'm currently using 50% bio diesel, 10% veg oil & 40% normal derv. This is in a BX 1.9 n/a.
It would proabably be a good idea to have a good look on the internet for specific advice on the isuzu engine to see if there are any issues. Using veg oil does put more strain on the pump, which if its on its way out anyway, will deffo bust it, but how long this takes is anyones guess.
He could buy a veg oil heater to help take the strain off the pump & then he could run a much higher concentration of veg oil to derv, something like 70-80% veg oil.
@ 56p/l, he could save a stack of money.
Let us know how your mate or your research into this goes.

The Cavalier had a 1686cc (1.7) turbo diesel made by Isuzu, it was indirect injection aswell and made 82bhp, good strong engine like the XUD9, possibly a bit more free revving and not as good mid-range. I know of a few people running veg on them as i think they all have Bosch pump, as mentioned a few litres at first, then more, then more!
Be lucky to find it for 56ppl though more like 68ppl from lidl but your still saving £10 per 30 litres compared to diesel.

thanks for the replies guys
have had a look at www.veg-oil-car.com and looks like the 1.7 d Isuzu engine has been run with veg in cavaliers and astras with no real problems but it would seem the Bosch pump is the critical piece here.
have passed the info on and now its up to him to check, double check and then hold his breath as he pours the first litre in

hes just a bit green with envy that i can run one of mine on SVO and decided he would like to see if he could shave a bit off his fuel bill as he has a 280 mile weekly commuteMULLEY wrote:If he's worried about using SVO, why not try biodiesel instead, thats available for 90p/l or less, still a significant saving of approx 15p/l.
think he is going to check what type his pump is and give it a go
