The valver lives again...

Post by Matt H »

After many months of my own attempts to fix it then giving up, then trying again, my beloved Phase 1 16v lives once more, after 2 hours with a professional auto electrician :D

The starting problem was traced to the live feed going into the ECU. Once fixed it fired up straight away, and should be going in for an MoT this week hopefully.

To say I'm happy is an understatement :D

More updates coming soon!

Nice one anyway, glad you got it sorted in the end.

Ah, good you got it sorted. Didn't you check the wiring to the ECU before and what was the problem with the live feed?

I think it was Kitch who posted a thread detailing the problems that someone had trying to get their 16v started. He went round and round changing and checking everything til after many weeks he found out that the starter motor - though working - was interfering with one of the electronic engine sensors. So he changed the starter and it worked again. How would any sane person find that out? And you would probably be insane by the time you did! :D

Yes, twas I found who found that while trying to figure out the weird starting problem mine had. It fixed itself in the end! We put it down to the battery being flat, but the starter drew everything it needed when it was cranking leaving not enough juice for all the sensors etc to send accurate info to the ECU. Mind you, it still takes fucking ages to start when hot now.

Good work, although if you\'d printed the PDF off on BX 16v forum and gone through it you\'d have worked it out for yourself :P

Well the wiring to the ECU was checked before, and there was voltage there... but not enough it would seem. This was when having another valver along side to compare readings with came in very handy

The guy who sorted it was a proper old school auto electrician as well... and he only charged £50! I think he enjoyed the challenge of working on something old :o

I think I'll have to live with the fact I can't do electronics. We all have our strengths an weaknesses I guess

Anyway, still over the moon to have it back again.
